Jr. Falcons Roundup: Five OT Win For Jr. Midgets

The curtain came down on the Colfax Jr. Falcons’ 2008 regular season last Saturday with the local teams competing on the road in Davis.

When the dust had settled, the Jr. Midgets had posted an unbelievable five overtime victory, the Midgets had handed their previously undefeated opponents their first loss of the season and three of the four Colfax teams had secured spots in the Sacramento Youth Football League’s playoffs which start Saturday.

Here’s a recap of last week’s games with Davis:

Colfax Jr. Midgets 36 Davis 30 – After the defenses for both teams shined in a 6-6 regulation standoff, the offense went to work in the extra sessions. In the first OT period, Davis won the coin toss and elected to go on offense and scored but Colfax’s John Hayes blocked the extra point attempt.

Colfax then answered with a 10-yard Tim Rawlins run.  Davis went ahead in the 2nd OT for an 18-12 lead but the Jr. Falcons’ Jeromy Cabodi blocked the extra point attempt. Colfax countered with another Rawlins 10-yard dash and 18-18 tie but Davis took four plays to go ahead 24-18 and missed the PAT.

The Jr. Falcons then responded with a 3-yard touchdown run by Chancey Trentman followed by another Rawlins score from 7-yards out. The PAT was missed leaving the score at 24-24. Davis went ahead 30-24, but Colfax came back. On a fourth and five, the Blue Devils’ defense keyed in on a fake to Rawlins and quarterback Michael Wilson found a wide open Wes Woodward in the end zone to tie it at 30-all.

After an incomplete Davis pass, Robby Lopez, Jory Weber and Carrick Hoffart teamed up to dump a Davis runner for a five yard loss. Two incomplete passes later, the door was open for the Falcons to win.

With the Blue Devil and Junior Falcon midgets exhorting their younger teammates on…along with anxious and excited parents and fans in the stands, Wilson handed off to Rawlins who ran right before bursting through a hole that the offensive line opened for the game deciding touchdown.

The top defensive efforts for the Falcons included Michael Calleja. Cabodi, Lopez, Jack Baldoni, Kyle Bryant, Connor Rawlins, Bailey Bean, Jacob Richie, Logan Hurst, Davis Jenkins, Jake Medeiros, Rawlins and Trentman. Baldoni and Cabodi both added interceptions with Cabodi’s pick at the Colfax 3-yard line with under a minute left in regulation being the game-saver.

Colfax Midgets 16 Davis 6 – In a key battle for playoff seeding, the Jr. Falcons scored first on a seven-play, 81--yard drive with Austin Perry going in for the score from six yards out. Perry then kicked the extra point for an 8-0 lead which Colfax took into the second half.

Late in the 3rd quarter, Davis recovered a bad snap on a Colfax punt attempt and went on to score on a short four-play, 15-yard drive. However, Colfax’s defense blocked the extra point attempt preserving an 8-6 Falcons’ lead.

Starting at its own 32, the “Green Algae” offense hit the field again. With the Blue Devils keying on Justin Kotey all game, Henry Freer and Perry carried the load and Davis could not find a way to stop the moving mass of green.

After a time-consuming 10–play, 78-yard drive, Perry bolted around left end to paydirt from 27-yards out. Perry converted for the 16-6 final score. With that conversion, Colfax scored more points than Davis had given up all season (14).

Great defensive contributions were made by Clay Southerland, Sammy Klar, Austin Mulderrig, Marcus Hoogendyk, Christian Cano, Cory Schlittenhart, Justin Kotey, Tim Stuck, Perry, Cody Erickson, Johnny Morrill, Henry Freer, R.J.Hurley and Andrew Weir. Southerland choked off Davis’ last gasp with an interception with under two minutes left to play. Davis had averaged 25.8 points per game.

Davis 39 Jr. Peewees 14 - Despite losing their final game, the Junior Pee Wees made the playoffs and will have a rematch with the 1st place and undefeated Davis squad on Saturday at Center.  Ryland Heimann started the scoring with an 8-yard run and Mason Ahrens converted for a 7-0 Falcons lead.

Down 27-7 in the fourth, Colfax went on a 7-play drive with Heimann passing to Logan McGlothlan for a score. A Heimann to Nathan Sawi pass conversion closed the score to 27-14, but the Falcons couldn’t get any closer.

The Falcons made it tough for the undefeated Blue Devils as Daniel Frye, Travyn Heimann, Chris Morrill, Will Besler, Mitchell Johnson, Jacob Stuck, Justin Ambrose, Michael Stuck, Carson Banish and Seth McGlothlan joined Sawi and Ahrens in defensive efforts.

Davis 12 Peewees 6 - The Peewees lost a heartbreaker as they took the Blue Devils to overtime. Davis scored first but the Falcons came back on runs by Matt Blackburn, Marc Avila and Sammy LaHaie which put the ball at the Blue Devils’ 2. From there a Colfax runner was hit hard at the goal line and fumbled, but Anthony Griggs pounced on the loose ball in the end zone for the touchdown.

Both defenses then kept each other off the board through regulation. In the first OT period, Griggs, Blackburn, Andy Newburn, Ryan Jenkins, LaHaie and Alex Tobiasz kept Davis out of the end zone. A Colfax pass was intercepted on the Falcons 2nd OT attempt and Davis followed up with a 10-yard score in their half of the OT period. Dallan Trentman, J.T. Hobbs, Beau Baggett, Travis Mullican, Brandon Bean, Skyler Saavedra all played well on defense.
