7 Hills Maintains Lead; Last Second Trey Lifts Weimar Over PV

The Nevada County Athletic League’s boys basketball chase is heading into the stretch run and there has been plenty of action and excitement in league games played this week.

On Wednesday, Seven Hills took its league leading 8th grade team to Lake of the Pines for an encounter with Forest Lake Christian and when the final buzzer sounded, the Raiders had improved to 8-1 with a 58-27 win over the host Falcons.

Meanwhile, at Lake Wildwood, in the day’s nail-biter, Weimar Hills rebounded from a tough loss at home to Gilmore on Tuesday by using Devon Loomis’ three-pointer from the corner with 12 seconds to play has the difference in a thrilling, 34-31 win over the Vikings.

Weimar Hills’ victory leaves the Warriors and Vikings with identical 6-3 NCAL marks, good for second place in the standings behind Seven Hills.

Here’s a recap of recent action:

8th Grade

Seven Hills 58 Forest Lake 27 – Guard Lenny Kirshbaum got the Raiders off and running with three first quarter three-point bombs on his way to finishing with a team-high 13 points.

Seven Hills, which plays at Union Hill today, also received 10 points from Sean Zuccaro and eight each from Dalton McClure and Luke Agness.

Forest Lake was paced in scoring by Daniel Pennington and Tanner Kounce, each with eight points.

Weimar Hills 34 Pleasant Valley 31 – Weimar Hills kept its pennant hopes alive with the come from behind victory.

Trailing 24-19 at the end of three quarters, the Warriors out-pointed the Vikings 15-7 over the final seven minutes to rally for the win.

Weimar built a 31-26 lead with just under two minutes to go but the Vikings rallied to tie the game at 31-31 with 25 seconds to play after baskets by Tanner Vallejo and Travis Hansen and a free toss by Jared Cook.

However, after winding the clock down to the 10 second mark, the Warriors called a time-out and on an inbounds play, Loomis shook free to get off the game winning trey.

Ryan Glazner’s 12 points and 11 from Will Buell led Weimar Hills (18-5) while Loomis added eight, all in the fourth quarter.

Pleasant Valley was led by Vallejo’s 13 markers and 10 from Kyle Cota.

Gilmore 40 Weimar Hills 29 – In a game played on Tuesday, Gilmore used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from the Warriors.

Cody Gardner sparked the Bombers win with 18 points including a 6 for 7 effort from the foul stripe. Trevor Bryant added eight points and Ian Davis five for the Bombers who were 13 of 18 from the charity line.

Matt Larson sank 11 points for Weimar while Ryan Glazner followed with six.

7th Grade

Seven Hills 35 Forest Lake 22 – The improving Raiders followed 10 points from Lucas Vojak and eight by Garrett O’Callghan to knock off second place standing Forest Lake Christian Wednesday afternoon.

Seven Hills, now 5-4 in league games, also received excellent rebounding and defense from Sean Anderson. Forest Lake falls to 7-3 with the setback.

Weimar Hills 41 Pleasant Valley 19 – The Warriors, who also defeated Gilmore, 41-19, on Tuesday, defeated the Vikings on the road Wedensday afternoon.

Michael Wilson’s 11 points, nine from Jack Baldoni and six apiece from Jordan Balser and Kevin Zachman paced the Warriors who are now 8-1 in NCAL play.

Brandon Fouse’s six points and five from Jakob Freele led Pleasant Valley.

In the win over Gilmore, the Warriors pulled away from a 10-10 halftime tie by breaking the game open with a 19-2 third quarter run. Baldoni’s seven points and six from Wilson sparked the win.
