AR Raiders sweeps past Jr. Miners

In SYFC 2007 season openers

  The Nevada Union Jr. Miners youth football teams made the trek to Carmichael last Saturday to open Sierra Youth Football Conference play and it was a long afternoon for the Blue and Gold.

In an intra-division game at Rio Americano High with the American River Jr. Raiders, the Jr. Miners showed some early growing pains by dropping all five contests.

“It was a tough day for the Jr. Miners but the kids gained some good experience and will learn from it,” said Jr. Miners vice-president Chuck Federmeyer who also doubles as a coach with the Peewees team.

Nevada Union dropped games to the Jr. Raiders by counts of 41-0 in the Mighty Mites; 33-0 in the Jr. Peewees; 39-0 in the Peewees; 26-20 in the Jr. Midgets game and 34-6 in the Midgets contest.

The day’s most exciting game was the Jr. Midgets as NU rallied from a 14-0 halftime deficit to almost pull out the victory.

The Miners, trailing 26-20 with time running out, drove to the Raiders’ 30-yard line with just less than two minutes to play before the hosts stopped a fourth down play inches short of a first down.

Scoring touchdowns for the Jr. Miners in the game were Ian Davis, Logan Sheftel and Jared Cook. Roman Seghezzi added a two point conversion.

In the Peewees game, Mike Tipton and Jason Murray were cited by the coaching staff for excellent play.

Nevada Union follows its bye this weekend by coming home to Hooper Stadium on Sept. 8 for home games with the Lincoln Jr. Zebras.
