JV Roundup: Cena boots NU past Ponderosa, 13-12

Josh Cena’s extra point kick midway through the fourth quarter proved to be the difference for the Nevada Union JV football team in a season opening 13-12 win over Ponderosa last Friday night in Shingle Springs.

NU trailed 12-0 before using second half touchdown runs from Robin Callas and Jesse Cannon to knot the contest. Cena then delivered his game winning extra point.

Following Cena’s kick, the Bruins drove deep into NU territory but was denied on a fourth down and three yards to go situation at the Miners’ 8-yard line.

NU will play its home opener Friday at Hooper Stadium against Rocklin with game time at 5:30 p.m.

Bear River 27 Capital Christian 7 – Sean O’Brien carried the ball 13 times for 105 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns on one-yard plunges to lift the Bruins past the Sacramento-based Grizzlies.

Sam Houston also added a touchdown on a 20-yard run and Chris Carcido scored on a 19-yard gallop as the Bruins gave new JV coach Chris Bean a win in his debut game.

Bear River quarterback Joey Levelle was 5x7 passing for 67 yards.

Carcido led Bear River’s defense with a pair of interceptions while Joey Reina added another pick. Top tacklers for the winners were Michael Wirth, O’Brien and John Cooke.

Placer 35 Rosemont 14 – Colin Mitchell tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Caleb Mitchell has the Hillmen opened the season with a win over Rosemont.

 Josh Turney, Darren Centi and Cameron Hennan all added solo touchdown runs for the winners.
