Bear River Frosh Fall, 18-0 A bitter defensive battle, which saw both team scoreless at halftime, went visiting Woodcreek’s way last Thursday as the Timberwolves from the Sierra Foothill League notched an 18-0 win over Bear River’s frosh football team. Tied 0-0 at intermission, the defensive-minded Timberwolves used its defense to set up good field postion for its offense as the visitors scored on a six-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter then followed that with a short scoring run to start the fourth stanza. Woodcreek capped off its afternoon by then returning a pass interception for its final touchdown. Bear River had a tough time trying to generate offensive punch in the tilt as Corey Pierce’s 25 yards on the ground in 10 carries topped the Bruins’ ground tally which was held to just 38 net yards. Quarterback Joe Levelle was 4x10 passing for 22 yards and the Bruins were held to just 60 total stripes by the aggressive Timberwolves’ defensive unit. Both Pierce and Sam Houston were leaders on defense with seven tackles apiece while Zach Welz chipped in with five stops. Bear River, now 1-1-1 on the season, will try and get back on the win trail Thursday when the Bruins host Marysville at 5:30 p.m. In other frosh football play involving Pioneer Valley League schools, Colfax was handed a 14-6 loss by Union Mine; Placer was clipped by Monterey Trail, 26-23; El Dorado bested Golden Sierra, 30-8; Lincoln blanked Gridley, 7-0; Mesa Verde fell to Oakmont, 21-6 and Whitney was nipped by Merced, 22-20. |
