Big Inning Lifts NC Sox to Jr. Title

A big inning can often do wonders to turning a baseball game around and if you don’t believe it just ask the Nevada City Red Sox’ junior division team.

Saturday night in Rocklin, the Red Sox reaped the benefits of thirteen bases on balls in one inning and turned the free passes into 15 runs on their way to wiping out a 5-1 deficit and eventually posting an 18-8 win over the Bear River Dodgers.

The win came in the championship game of the District 11 Tournament of Champions junior division tournament. The Red Sox, who had defeated the Tri-City Athletics, 13-9, in Thursday’s semi-finals, picked up some big hits from Jake Hofheinz, Kyle Turiello, Isaac Cuella and Brandon O’Callaghan to help power their way past the Dodgers.

Cuellar and Greg Callison teamed up on the mound to hold the heavy hitting Dodgers to just eight spaced hits. For the Dodgers, Jake Sween and Josh Toft both paired raps.

I In advancing to the title game, the Bear River Dodgers captured their first two TOC games with an 18-1 win over the Lincoln Padres and then another 18-1 win, this time over the Rocklin Rangers.

I In the win over the Lincoln Padres 18-1, the threesome of Shane Soria, Robert Bristol and Chris Nix combined on a five-inning no-hitter. Soria pitched three and a third innings striking out 3 while Bristol and Nix pitched the last 2 innings.

After trailing 1-0 after one, the Dodgers sent nine
batters in the second inning scoring 5 runs on five
hits.

In the third, 10 more batters went around scored 4 more tallies to lead 9-1 after 3 innings.

Leading the Dodgers’ offensive surge was Shane Soria 4-4 with a
double, Josh Toft 3-4, Walker Carpenter 2-2 with a
double, Brandon Bump 2-3, Jake Sween 2-3 and Sammy
Aquilar 2-3.

In the victory over the Rangers from Rocklin, Jake Sween was outstanding hill as he went the distance of the shortened 4 1/2 inning game giving up just 3 hits, striking out 8 and
walking 5.

On offense, Sween broke the game open in the second inning when he connected for a three-run homer making it 5-1. The Dodgers went on to score three more runs in the inning keyed by Josh Toft's double. Meanwhile, both Shane Soria and Walker Carpenter added RBI singles to help break the game open. The Dodger bats kept coming with 4 more runs in the 3rd and 6 more in the 4th inning.

Jake Sween finished 2-3 with a HR while Shane Soria added a 2-3 game and Sam Houston went 2-2.

Defensively, the Dodgers did not commit any errors in
the two games.
