August, 13, 2008Colfax players help Hard 90Slam shine in CooperstownAided by a pair of Colfax area players, the Hard 90 Slam 13-and under baseball team has compiled a 5-1 record in games played through Wednesday morning and was positioning itself for a high seed in the championship bracket of the 98-team Cooperstown Field of Dreams National Tournament of Champions being contested in Cooperstown, New York. Sparked by Devon Loomis’ three-run home run, the Slam handed the previously undefeated B&B Troopers of Hackensack, New Jersey a 14-0 blasting Wednesday morning to finish pool play with a 5-1 record. Earlier in the tournament, with Devon Loomis contributing a key hit in a comeback rally and also gaining the pitching win and teammate David Campbell delivering another key two-run single, Hard 90 opened the tourney last Sunday with a 7-4 win over the Timberline, Titans of Hanover, New Hampshire. Following its win over the New Hampshire team, Hard 90, which is mainly comprised of players from the Rocklin and Roseville areas, then suffered a 7-3 loss to the undefeated Las Vegas Baseball Academy. However, the Slam rebounded with a 14-0 win over the Texas Venom from Houston, Texas; eked out a 7-6 victory over the Warriors from Andover, Massachusetts and then posted an 8-1 win over the Cobras from Racine, Wisconsin. In the win over the Massachusetts team, Campbell’s three-run bottom of the sixth inning walk-off home run was the difference in the come from behind victory. The tournament is being contested on 22 fields at the Dream Field Complex. Jacob Oakley, another Slam player who lives in Yuba City, won the tournament’s home run derby by besting over 200 competitors. Oakley hit six home runs in 10 attempts. |
