Del Oro Blanks Vikes, 35-0, Completes 10-0 Season Nov. 14, 2008 With a chance to make school history, the Del Oro freshman football team went out put forth a championship effort. Leaving no doubt on their supremacy on the gridiron this fall, the Golden Eagles capped a perfect 10-0 campaign by rolling past visiting Oakmont, 35-0. The win also cinched an outright Sierra Foothill League championship for the Golden Eagles as Del Oro rolled through the SFL with a perfect 5-0 league mark. The 22 points that the Golden Eagles allowed on defense in 10 games this season is beleived to be the fewest amount given up at any level at Del Oro in the 50-year history of the school. “The kids came out and were focused to play tonight,” said Del Oro defensive coordinator Mark Jeter. “They had a heck of a year and have a lot to be proud of.” Del Oro, which allowed just 22 points to be scored on its defense in 10 games, used another sturdy defensive outing as its catalyst with Russell Smith, Tanner Huber, Tylor Johnson and Jake Jackson all having stellar games. Meanwhile, Blake Covey added a pass interception and played well in the secondary with help from Cameron Saldano to keep the Vikings off the scoreboard. The shutout was the fifth of the season for the Golden Eagles. Del Oro built a 21-0 lead by halftime thanks to a pair of touchdowns from Nick O’Sullivan and another from Huber. O’Sullivan’s 45-yard run on the fourth play of the game got the romp started. O’Sullivan also added an 18-yard touchdown gallop in the second quarter while Huber scored on a one-yard plunge. In the second half, Jackson latched on to a five-yard scoring pass from Bobby Heatherington and Kyle Anderson completed the scoring with a 15-yard scamper. Anderson was successful on four of five extra point kicks for the winners and Heatherington completed the scoring with a two-point conversion run.
