Del Oro JV’s, Frosh Sweep Colfax

In a unique doubleheader to open the 2008 prep football season, Del Oro’s JV and Frosh football teams hosted Colfax Thursday night in Loomis.

Because both Del and Colfax’s varsity teams are playing in the “Rocky Mountain Rumble” showcase games Saturday in Idaho, the Golden Eagles and Falcons hooked up in the twinbill which drew a good turnout at Eagle Stadium.

In a very competitive JV game which pitted a pair of teams that won respective league championships as freshmen, Del Oro used Kenny Andri’s back-breaking 97-yard touchdown run late in the 4th quarter to pull away for a 27-12 win over the Falcons.

Colfax, behind the running of Josh Moreno and Connor Brown and the passing of Avery Baccala, had led 6-0 at halftime. The Colfax score came on a 14-yard pass from Baccala to Chase Mosier.

However, Del Oro came alive in the second half behind big plays from quarterback Max Magelby, halfback Cody O’Sullivan and Andri to turn the tide of the game. Sullivan scored Del Oro's first touchdown to tie the game in the third quarter before Magelby's extra point kick made it 7-6, Del Oro.

After the Golden Eagles moved ahead 21-12 midway through the fourth quarter, a key sequence in the game came after Colfax had used a long kickoff return by Jake Karbowski and a personal foul penatly on the Eagles to push inside Del Oro's 10-yard line.

Colfax tried three straight running plays to move the ball to the Del Oro three-yard line, a fourth down Falcons pass fell incomplete in the end zone.

However, on the first play after the change of Downs, Andri broke through the line and was off to the races to complete the game changing 97-yard scoring run.

For Colfax, Conner Brown led the rushers with 16 carries for 85 yards. He was followed by Moreno's 41 yards on seven carries, Baccala who was 3x15 and Karbowski who was 2x13.

Through the air, Baccala hit on 8 of 21 passes for 124 yards and one touchdown. Mosier was the leading receiver with three catches for 57 yards. Moreno had two grabs for 10 yards, Austin Brown a pair of 31 more yards and Alan Meyers one catch for 26 yards.

Colfax's JVs will host Truckee next Friday in their home opener at Marson Stadium starting at 5:30 p.m. Del Oro will play next Saturday again at home against Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa.

Del Oro Frosh 34 Colfax 0 - In the frosh game, Colfax hung tough with a talented Del Oro squad as the Falcons trailed st 7-0 at halftime. However, Del Oro’s size and depth took over in the second half and produced a 34-0 win.
