Forest Lake surprises Union Hill in NCAL tourney opener

It didn’t take long for the first upset of the Nevada County Athletic League’s girls 8th grade basketball tournament to go into the books.

In a first round game played at Union Hill Wednesday, No. 5 seeded Forest Lake Christian continued their hot play of late by handing No. 4 seeded Union Hill a 34-25 defeat.

The win for the Falcons moves them into today’s 5:45 p.m. semi-final game against No. 1 seeded Seven Hills today at Bear River High at 5:45.

In other first round 8th grade division games, No. 2 seeded Magnolia easily advanced with a 36-16 win over Pleasant Valley and No. 3 seeded Weimar Hills bounced Lyman Gilmore, 35-14.

Weimar Hills was led by Haley Wall’s 10 points and 8 from Sara Davidson.

Magnolia and Weimar Hills will meet in this evening’s feature 8:15 semi-final game at Bear River.

An 8th grade consolation bracket game is also scheduled for 5:15 p.m. today at Magnolia School between Gilmore and Pleasant Valley.

In 7th grade first round action, all of the seeded teams prevailed with home court wins.

In Meadow Vista, Weimar Hills received 17 points from Katey Thomas and 10 from Amber Tobiasz in a 42-14 romp over Gilmore.

 Weimar Hills led just 17-12 at halftime but outscored the Bombers, 21-0, in the third quarter with Thomas tanking 13 points. Cassie Harrison added seven for the Lady Warriors while Kelly Harris contributed five.

In other first round action, Union Hill’s Tori Miraldi tallied 15 points to help guide the Bearcats past Seven Hills, 33-6, and Magnolia easily dispatched Forest Lake, 38-11.

In winner’s bracket 7th grade games today at Bear River, top-seeded Pleasant Valley takes on Union Hill at 4;30 p.m. while Weimar Hills meets Magnolia at 7 p.m.

In a consolation bracket 7th grade game today, Forest Lake and Gilmore will play at Magnolia School starting at 4 p.m.

The small schools division of the tournament will kickoff today with a pair of games at Magnolia School. At 6:30 p.m., top-seeded Read Springs will play Grass Valley Charter and at 7:45 p.m. Chicago Park meets Yuba River Charter.
