Golden Eagles Rock Thunder

Del Oro's frosh football team heads into Thursday night'sgame with Oakmont needing a win to cinch the outright Pioneer Valley League championship. The Golden Eagles improved to 9-0 with a 41-0 thumping of Rocklin last week.

Top-Ranked Eagles, No. 2 NU Make It Look Easy

The top two teams in the foothillpreps.com’s freshman football pool continued to roll Thursday night and they looked good doing it.

In Loomis, undefeated Del Oro continued its memorable season by bolting to a four- touchdown lead by halftime in an eventual, 41-0 throttling of Rocklin.

The No. 1 ranked Golden Eagles are now 4-0 in Sierra Foothill League games and are 9-0 overall. Del Oro will attempt to close out a perfect 10-0 season next Thursday when they host Oakmont’s Vikings.

Meanwhile, in Grass Valley, NU made it eight straight wins and took a step towards the Delta River League title by handing Elk Grove a 48-13 defeat.

In other frosh action last night, Bear River went on the road and pulled out a 14-12 win at Lincoln.

Here’s Thursday’s recap of area frosh games:

Del Oro 41 Rocklin 0 – Kyle Anderson scored on a 45-yard scoring run on the game’s first play from scrimmage to set the tone in the Golden Eagles’ runaway win.

Quarterback Bobby Heatherington also added a 12-yard bootleg score for the winners while Tanner Huber scored from four-yards out and Nick O’Sullivan capped a big first half by taking a punt back 65 yards for the points that made it 28-0 by halftime.

Del Oro completed its scoring with Daniel Thomas hauling in a 25-yard fade pattern from Heatherington  in which he outwrestled a Thunder defender for the ball and on a 21-yard run by Russell Smith.

 

Bear River 14 Lincoln 12 – Trailing 6-0 early, the Bruins responded with a pair of touchdowns and converted two extra points to take the narrow win and improve their season record to 7-2.

Justin Butler hauled in a scoring pass from Dallen Huetter for one score while Jimmy Bamburg tallied on a run  for the other Bruins score. Bear River, which closes the season next week by hosting El Dorado, is 3-2 in Pioneer Valley League games. 

Nevada Union 48 Elk Grove 13 - Nevada Union’s freshman football team took a giant stride toward a championship season Thursday night.

Playing equally Delta River Conference unbeaten Elk Grove at Hooper Stadium, the Miners flexed their muscles in a big way as they posted a 48-13 win.

The victory gives NU a perfect 3-0 DRC slate with an away game next Thursday at Davis. NU is also a perfect 8-0 overall on the season.

NU led from start to finish in this one has Brad Spangler, who had 133 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the contest, opened the game by taking the ball in from 10 yards out for the Miners’ first touchdown.

On the next possession, the Miners capitalized by recovering a bad punt snap at the Elk Grove 22-yard line and three plays quarterback Josiah Paye ran the ball in from seven yards out.

The Miners then continued their blitz by scoring in just two plays has Spangler broke loose from 48 yards away for another score.

Following a NU pass interception by  Jake Hofheinz, the Miners were at it again with running back Gabe Humphers reaching pay-dirt from 10 yards out.

Trailing 28-0 after the end of a quarter, Elk Grove was able to score a touchdown in the second quarter to make it 28-6 but the Miners answered with a 50 yard drive in three plays capped by Paye’s 29-yard scoring run.

Paye finished the game with 93 yards rushing and two touchdowns on just three carries.

NU scored yet again before halftime as following an Alec Sarner fumble recovery, Conner Keith tallied on an 18-yard run to up the count to 42-6 NU at the break.

After a scoreless third quarter, Alex Sandoval blocked a punt in the fourth quarter, which was recovered by Ashton Christensen at the 12 yard line. Spangler scored his third touchdown to make the score 48-6. Elk Grove scored a late touchdown to make the final 43-13.

The NU defense was led by Humphers with 11 tackles. Spangler and Keith each had seven apiece while tackle Alex Sandoval had six solo tackles and helped control the line of scrimmage with Cyle Bush, Humphers, Sarner, Spangler, Conner Fuller, Kyler Malarae. Christian Dupont had a quarterback sack.
