Tanner Vallejo skirts end in action from Thursday's Nevada Union-Rocklin frosh football game. Vallejo and his NU teammates improved to 2-0 on the season with a 34-0 win over the host Thunder. Sept. 18, 2009 Bruins power past Redskins in opener, 30-0 Bear River’s freshman football team opened its season one week later than most of the other area schools but showed no ill effects from the extra week's rest. A week after having their opening game with El Camino cancelled because of a starting time mix-up, the Bruins made the long trek to San Andreas and came home with a 30-0 blanking of host Calaveras. Cody Heard led the Bruins by tallying a pair of touchdowns on runs of two and 30 yards and also was on the receiving end of a 15-yard scoring aerial from Dillon Smith. Travis McKnight also added another score on a 10-yard run while the defense was sparked by Hayden Macklin and Michael Raigoza, each with pass interceptions. In other frosh games Thursday: Nevada Union 34, Rocklin 0 - Michael Buonarati ran 47 yards for one touchdown and Ian Davis took back a punt 65 yards for another score in the game’s first five minutes and the Miners never looked back in blanking the Thunder. Tyler Fernandez, Cameron Townsend, Austin Marks, and Miguel Espinosa keyed a NU defense which shut down the hosts on the night. Meanwhile, Cody Gardner had a pass interception. Quarterback Hank Humphers helped up the count to 20-0 at halftime when he connected with tight end Jared Cook with a 23-yard pass late in the second quarter. Humphers also hit Bobby Curtis with a 24 yard TD pass, followed by a pass to Sean Zuccaro for the two point conversion. Tanner Vallejo completed the scoring with a three yard TD run while Stone Sander had the longest run of the day of 72 yards. On the offensive line, Tim Dudley, Forest Good, and Eli Butcher all had strong efforts. Placer 48 Woodcreek 14 – The Hillmen improved to 2-0 by using a big second half effort to stymie the visiting Timberwolves. Leading just 20-14 at halftime, the Hillmen erupted following the offensive fireworks of running back Michael Robinson and quarterback Casey Yunk. Robinson led all rushers with 18 carries for 175 yards and two touchdowns while Yunk added 62 more rushing yards and also scored a pair of six-pointers. Jaylen Lewis also shined for the winners as he had a 43-yard pass interception return for another score and also added a 14-yard scoring run. Placer coach Jim Gray credited good defensive games from Jack Hatlerly, Ryan Talley, Dominick Granieri, Isaac Brahce and Eddie Vandedoes. Granite Bay 21 Del Oro 20 – The Golden Eagles couldn’t hold a 12-0 halftime lead in the non-league loss to the host Grizzlies. Del Oro will host Granite Bay Oct. 14 in the Sierra Foothill League opener. Del Oro quarterback Peter Denham threw three touchdown passes, two to Josh Krieger and one – on a 60-yard play – to Aaron Freeman. Truckee 33 Colfax 7 – Austin Mulderrig’s 50-yard pass interception return in the second half set up Justin Kotey’s three-yard touchdown run for the Falcons’ lone score in the road loss.. Colfax, 0-2, fell behind 20-0 at halftime, and had a hard time generating offense against the Wolverines.
