NU Blasts Will C. Wood, 48-16; DO Blanks Herd, 40-0

Nevada Union’s frosh football team captured its fifth consecutive win Thursday night by fashioning a 48-16 drubbing over visiting Will C. Wood of Vacaville.

The win leaves the Miners at 5-0 and in good shape going into a bye week. NU will open Delta Valley League play on Oct. 23 against Franklin of Elk Grove.

In Thursday’s action, NU opened the scoring after a long drive which was capped when quarterback Josiah Paye scrambled his way 29-yards for a touchdown. Gabe Humpers then hauled in a two-point conversion pass from Paye to make it, 8-0, Miners.

In the second period, Paye picked off a Wood pass and after another sustained march, the NU signal-caller optioned in from six-yards out. Tyler Houlihan booted the extra point kick to make it, 15-0.


NU wasn’t done yet in the first half though as after stopping the Wildcats again, the Miners took off on another scoring drive which was capped when Paye found Humphers on a 34-yard scoring strike to up the count to 22-0.

The Miners then added third quarter touchdowns on a 60-yard jaunt by Brad Spangler and another nine-yard tally by Kyler Malarae.

NU, ranked second in this week’s foothillpreps.com’s Frosh Big Little Five poll,  then used a 45 yard punt return by Spangler and a 14-yard tally by Mikey Cordova to complete its scoring.

In other frosh action Thursday:

Del Oro 40 Elk Grove 0 -  Quarterback Bobby Heatherington threw touchdown passes to Daniel Thomas and Alex Berrtrando and Kyle Anderson rushed for three more scores as Del Oro’s frosh football team drubbed Elk Grove, 40-0, Thursday night in Loomis.

Del Oro, now 5-0 on the season, was sparked on defense by excellent games from Tanner Huber, Jake Jackson and Tylor Johnson.

The Golden Eagles open Sierra Foothill League play at Granite Bay next Thursday.

Placer 34 El Dorado 12 - Casey Sabins rushed for three touchdowns, Johnny Foley added 126 yards rushing on 13 carries and Hayden Goodwin tallied another touchdown as the host Hillmen won their second straight Pioneer Valley League game.

Placer (2-3, 2-0)  led 13-0 at halftime and received stellar play on defense from David Daniels with an interception, D.J. Rodriguez, Joe Barrera and Louie Esway all with sacks and Cameron Dean and Colton Davenport with solid, all-around efforts.

Placer will play a non-league game next Thursday at Foothill.

 

Whitney 29 Colfax 22 – In a battle of offenses, Whitney recovered an on-sides kick with 2:20 to play and then ran out the clock to preserve the Pioneer Valley League win in Rocklin.

Whitney (5-0, 2-0) received a three-touchdown passing night from quarterback Jake Rodriguez including a pair which came on fourth down from over 30-yards out. Rodriguez also rushed 11 times for 78 yards.

Colfax (3-2, 1-1) was led by running backs Hunter Owens (12x143) and Nolan Karbowski (9x68). Quarterback Austin Young also threw a touchdown pass to Benton Brown.

Bear River 21 Lindhurst 6 – Defensive lineman Dylan Huffman returned a tipped pass 23 yards for one touchdown and linebacker Josh Toft returned a  fumble to set up another Bear River score as the Bruins notched the non-league road win.

Bruins fullback Jim Bamburg ran for two more scores as Bear River improved to 4-1 overall. The Bruins host undefeated Whitney next Thursday.
