BIG STOP- A pair of Colfax frosh defenders, Austin Perry (8) and Tim Stuck (45), team up to bring down an El Dorado ball carrier in action from Oct. 22. The Falcons had a bye last night and will take a 4-3 overall record to Placer next Thursday, Nov. 5 in Pioneer Valley League action.

 

NU Frosh Capture 8th Straight Win

A big first half laid down the ground work for the Nevada Union Miners’ frosh football team’s big victory Thursday night over Christian Brothers.

Playing at Hooper Stadium for the first time in four weeks, the Miners scored parlayed a big first half points explosion into a 69-14 win over the visiting Falcons from Sacramento.

The Miners tallied 38 big points in the first half led by tight end Jared Cook who caught three touchdown passes from Kyle Cota on plays covering 60, 35 and 13 yards.

Also getting into the scoring act were Tanner Vallejo who scored on a 20 yard run and Stone Sander who tallied on a 15 yard jaunt.


“The offensive line of Saturnino, Townsend, Butcher, Good, and Dudley had another outstanding game,” said NU coach Greg Brown.

NU also had big efforts from David Sherman carried the ball four times, gained 130 yards and scored three touchdowns while Nate Dickinson scored from 23 yards out, and had three carries for 68 yards.

Ian Davis added a safety for NU in the second half while Cody Gardner grabbed a 2 point conversion pass from Cota in the first half. Mike Buonarti also booted three extra points while Gardner and Stone each had pass interception.

On defense, Vallejo lead the way with seven tackles, while Dickinson and Davis each had five tackles. Blake Allen had a sack and two tackles. Eli Butcher and Jared Cook each recovered a fumble.

NU, now 8-0 on the season, plays a key Delta Valley game next Thursday at Elk Grove.

Placer 49 Lincoln 7 - The Placer frosh football team remained undefeated in Pioneer Valley League play Thursday night by handing visiting Lincoln a 49-7 drubbing at LeFebvre Stadium.

The Hillmen used their punishing ground game and an effective passing attack to jump out to a 28-0 halftime lead before extending it to 49-0 at the end of three quarters.

“The kids were pretty fired up tonight,” said Placer coach Jim Gray. “I don’t know if it had anything to do with the varsity’s big game but our kids were ready tonight.”

Placer fullback Michael Robinson scored three touchdowns and picked up 142 yards on the ground while teammate Isaac Brahce added a pair of scores, 67 yards on the ground and was a perfect 7x7 on extra point kicks.

Quarterback Casey Yunk was 6 of 9 through the air which included a 26-yard touchdown pass to Alex Graziano.

Providing excellent blocking on the offensive line for the winners were Brian Sabins and James Hubbard while on defense the Hillmen were led by Jake Lewis’ eight tackles and an interception from Isaiah Pineiro.

The win moved Placer’s season record to 7-1 and its PVL slate to 4-0. The Hillmen, who host Colfax -which had a bye last night - next Thursday, trail Whitney (8-0, 5-0) by a half-game in the league standings. Whitney defeated El Dorado, 70-6, Thursday night in Placerville.

Bear River 37 Mesa Verde 12 – Cody Heard rushed for 145 yards and scored three touchdowns to help pace the Bear River frosh past Mesa Verde Thursday at San Juan.

Heard scored on runs of 15, 54, and 10 yards and was joined in the scoring parade by Austin Dowling who added a 12-yard scoring rush and Hayden Macklin who caught a 52-yard touchdown pass from Dillon Smith.

Bear River (2-5, 1-3) hosts Lincoln next Thursday.

Del Oro 27 Woodcreek 0 – The Golden Eagles improved to 6-2 overall on the season with the Sierra Foothill League road win over the Timberwolves.

Zach LaBar and Brandt Eller both had touchdowns for the winners while LaBar and Josh Krieger each added pass interceptions. Mark Leveron also had a strong game on defense with a long return after a fumble strip.
