Frosh Roundup:

Hillmen Win 1st; NU, DO Roll

Saying that Placer High's Hayden Goodwin was a busy man in Citrus Heights Thursday may be the understatement of the freshman football season.

With Goodwin scoring four touchdowns - all on a different variety of ways - the Hillmen won their first game of the season by rolling past Mesa Verde, 39-8, in the Pioneer Valley League opener played at Mesa.

"He had a remarkable game," said Placer coach Jim Gray. "You don't see what he did everyday in football."

Goodwin got Placer kick-started off on the right foot when he returned the opening kickoff 70 yards for one score. He then returned a Mesa pass interception 60 yards for another score and also caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jacob Callaghan for six more points.

And, for good measure, Goodwin took back a punt 60 yards for a fourth touchdown.

Callaghan also fired a 10-yard scoring aerial to David Daniel while Jordan Ralls tallied on an 18-yard run for the final score.

For the Hillmen on defense, Johhny Foley was credited with 15 tackles and a sack while Mike Stangland, Dylan Limanek, Joe Magino and Ralls all had good games.

Nevada Union 36 Natomas 6 - Hitting the road Thusday, the Miners ventured to Sacramento and improved to 4-0 with the win over the Nighthawks.

NU led from start to finish in the game as a 15-yard touchdown run by Brad Spangler and a Josiah Paye threw to Gabe Humphers two-point conversion pass gave NU a quick 8-0 lead.

NU then countered with a defensive score as on the kickoff after NU's touchdown, Cyle Bush stripped the football from a Natomas runners and ran it in 40-yards for anaother touchdown. Tyler Houlihan, who had four PAT boots on the night, then kicked the extra point for a 15-0 advantage.

A Paye pass for 30-yards to tight end Conner Fuller set up NU's next score as Spangler went over from 11-yards away to up the count to 22-0.

Paye, who was 4x4 passing for 109 yards in the win, then connected with Spangler on a 49-yard scoring pass and then also ran one in a QB keeper from 25 yards out for NU's final six points.

NU defense was led by linebacker Connor Keith who had eight solo tackles while Ron Hakala, Brandon Fabela, and Mikey Cordova also had good outings.

Garrett Strohm added more punch to the NU offense with 78 yards on eight carries.

Del Oro 48 Merced 0 – The Golden Eagles made the long trek to Merced and returned with a lopsided win to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Nick O’Sullivan scored a pair of touchdowns and quarterback Bobby Heatherington ran for one and passed for two more to lead the undefeated Golden Eagles to the easy road win.

Blake Covey was a standout on defense for Del Oro which has allowed just six points through its first four games of the season.
