JV, Frosh Grid Poll: Leaders Remain Unchanged

A nail-biting win by Nevada Union’s JV team and another strong effort by Del Oro’s freshman kept the two respective squads atop the foothillpreps.com’s weekly football rankings.

Nevada Union’s JVs needed a fourth quarter rally and defensive stand to defeat a previously undefeated and talented Caesar Chavez of Stockton team, 29-28, last Friday in Grass Valley.

NU, now 3-0 on the season, plays at Natomas this Friday night.

Del Oro’s freshmen team  surrendered its first points of the season last Thursday but the Golden Eagles still improved to 3-0 with a 32-6 blasting of Enochs of Modesto.

Del Oro will have a tough road test on Thursday with a long trip for an afternoon game at Merced.

Here’s this week’s rankings:

JV Top Five

  • Nevada Union (3-0) – Tyler Pitts and Michael Champagne teamed on a key game-cinching sack in the waning moments to preserve the Miners’ one-point win. Up Next:  Friday at Natomas.

  • Del Oro (3-0) – The Golden Eagles trailed early but rallied for a 26-14 win over Enochs of Modesto. Up Next: Saturday vs. Merced at Atwater High.

  • Placer (2-1) – Hillmen move up two spots with big 55-29 win over Casa Roble. Speedsters Josh Turney and Darren Centi combined for four touchdowns. Up Next: Friday at Mesa Verde.

  • Colfax (0-3) – All three Colfax losses are to teams that combined are 9-0. Falcons out-gained Union Mine in 7-6 loss. Up Next: Friday at home vs. Bear River.

  • Bear River (1-2) – Bruins played better than final 28-0 score loss to Woodcreek indicates. Big PVL opener Friday at Colfax.

Frosh Big Little Five

  • Del Oro (3-0) – Golden Eagles intercepted three passes and fell on a fumble for another defensive score in win over Enochs. Up Next: Thursday at Merced.

  • Nevada Union (3-0) – Miners weren’t challenged in 65-22 win over Caesar Chavez of Stockton. Gabe Humphers and Brad Spangle give Miners solid 1-2 rushing punch. Up Next: Thursday at Natomas.

  • Bear River (3-0) – After breezing through first two games, Bruins were challenged in 23-12 win at Woodcreek. Up Next: Thursday at Colfax.

  • Colfax (2-1) – Falcons went on road and posted 28-0 win over previously undefeated Union Mine team. Up Next: Thursday at home vs. Bear River in PVL opener.

  • Placer (0-3) – With tough preseason slate behind them, Hillmen will look for win No. 1 today at Mesa Verde. Up Next: Thursday ay Mesa Verde.
