Grid Rankings Go Down To Wire

The final week of the high school football regular season is upon us and there’s plenty of storylines that will be monitored Thursday and Friday has league seasons wind down and foothillpreps.com gets set to release its final rankings next week.

Some interesting scenarios are developing with Thursday’s freshman games has both Del Oro and Nevada Union go after perfect 10-0 seasons.

In Loomis, the Golden Eagles, who are averaging over 40 points a game in Sierra Foothill League contests, will put their perfect 9-0 overall mark and 4-0 SFL record on the line against a one-league loss Oakmont team what comes into Eagle Stadium looking for a win and a share of the SFL title.

Nevada Union, meanwhile, is also 9-0 and will be on the road Thursday at Davis where a win would complete a perfect season and sew up an outright Delta Valley Conference title. Last Thursday’s 48-13 victory over Elk Grove gave the Miners at least a piece of the conference title.

In an interesting item in regards to the frosh rankings, many foothill area armchair quarterbacks were wondering why No. 1 Del Oro, through this week, was holding the edge on No. 2 Nevada Union.

In comparative games, Del Oro defeated Elk Grove, 40-0 while NU topped the Herd, 48-13.

However, Del Oro also owns a 30-3 win over a Roseville team that defeated Franklin of Elk Grove, the same team NU squeaked by, 8-6, last month.

But fans should take heed, it’s possible that when the new Sac-Joaquin Section realignment takes hold in 2010, these two frosh teams could end up in the same (SFL) league.

Here’s this week’s poll:

JV Top Five

  • Placer (8-1) – The Hillmen are a game away from a rags-to-riches story. Only 4-5-1 as frosh a year ago, Placer needs win over Whitney to secure outright PVL crown.

  • Del Oro (7-2) – Kenny Andri’s 4 TDs spark second half rally that vaults Golden Eagles past Rocklin, 30-19. Del Oro’s 33-7 pasting of  Elk Grove in October solidifies this ranking.

  • Nevada Union (8-1) – Miners almost let big lead slip away in 36-33 win over Elk Grove. At Davis Friday.

  • Colfax (5-4) – Josh Moreno-less Falcons floundered in 26-0 loss to Placer.

  • Bear River (3-6) – Bruins are better than record indicates. Look for big closing win Friday at Lake of the Pines versus El Dorado.

Frosh Big Little Five

  • Del Oro (9-0) – It won’t be easy for Golden Eagles as a pesky one SFL loss Oakmont team comes to Loomis ready to crash the Black and Gold’s party.

  • Nevada Union (9-0) – Talented Miners head to Davis looking for Golden Eagles to slip up.

  • Colfax (6-2) – This could be one of Mondo Alonzo and Bob Luke’s best coaching jobs ever. Last week: Colfax 28 Placer 7. At Lincoln Thursday.

  • Bear River (7-2) – Bruins may have best overall player talent in an “up” PVL this season. Thursday: at home versus El Dorado.

  • Placer (4-5) – Tied 7-7 at halftime, Hillmen miscues took its toll in second half.
