Strong line play boosts Golden Eagles

Led by it strong interior line play, the Del Oro JV football team made its long ride home from Grass Valley last Friday night both a happy and victorious one.

Sparked by stalwart efforts from defensive linemen Brandon Johnson, Santino Garcia and Jonah MeKebri, the Golden Eagles throttled Nevada Union’s wing-T offense on their way to a 34-8 Sierra Foothill League drubbing of the Miners.

“Our down defensive guys don’t usually get a lot of credit but they all played well,’ said Del Oro coach Jerry Van Lengen. “It was a very good effort all the way around.”

The win for Del Oro now raises the Golden Eagles’ season mark to 7-0 and lifts their SFL record to 2-0. The Golden Eagles face another tough test on Friday when Granite Bay visits Eagle Stadium for a 5:30 p.m. game.

In Friday’s game, Del Oro defensive back Jahann Nargussi picked off a Miners’ pass on the game’s first possession and the turnover led to a 48-yard scoring pass-run play from quarterback Michael Moore to Daniel Becker. Mason Humes delivered the PAT boot for a quick 7-0 margin.

The Golden Eagles upped the count to 13-0 later in the opening quarter when fullback Dylan Kainrath busted loose from 60-yards out for another DO touchdown.

After the teams traded possession for much of the second stanza, Del Oro hit the scoreboard again. This time it was Moore finding Nargussi on a 32-yard touchdown aerial that made the tally, 20-0, Golden Eagles at halftime.

If NU had visions of making a run at the Golden Eagles in the second half, the thoughts were quickly tempered when Johnathon Tuttle took the Miners’ second half kickoff and retunred it 75 yards for a score and a 27-0 advantage.

After some nice running by Tuttle, Duncan Small, Jeremy Pilcher and Shane Peterson, Moore capped Del Oro’s scoring with a 10-yard run in the fourth period. Blake Stahl also played well defensively for the winners.

Nevada Union was held to less than 200 yards total offense on the evening. Top rushers for the Miners included Jake Berger (12x53), Jakob Freele (1x48), Jason Murray (11x45) and Gareth Noxon (6x43). Noxon scored NU's lone touchdown on the evening.

In other SFL JV games last week, Rocklin squeezed past Roseville, 28-27, and Granite Bay walloped Woodcreek, 43-14.
