Big Weekend of Football Action

Kane and the Falcons improved their record to 3-1 on the season with a 31-7 win over the host Blue Devils. Sept. 26, 2011 NU JVs Top Herd, 21-14 It was a wild weekend of football for foothills area JV and frosh teams as several outstanding team and individual performances were turned in. On the JV level, Nevada Union's improving Miners served notice that they will be ready for the start of Sierra Foothill League play with a hard earned 21-7 win over Elk Grove. Meanwhile, down Highway 49 at Lake of the Pines, one of the area's longest win streaks came to an end as Bear River fell to River Valley of Yuba City, 28-21. The loss snapped the Bruins' 25-game win streak which dated back to the 2008 season. Meanwhile, on the frosh level, Nevada Union ran into a rugged Yuba City team on Thursday and was handed its first los of the season, 20-14. But the big news of the day went to Placer frosh running back Cole Blackwell who rushed for 332 yards and scored six touchdowns as the Hillmen outgunned Woodland, 47-32. Here's a recapof last week's action: JV Nevada Union 21 Elk Grove 7 - Michael Tapia was 8 of 14 in the air for 134 yards and tossed a pair of touchdowns to Gareth Noxon as the Miners topped the visiting Thundering Herd Friday at Hooper Stadium. Jake Berger, who scored NU's other touchdown, rushed 17 times for 91 yards while Noxon added 53 on 11 carries. Connor McGuire was NU's top target in the game with four receptions for 74 yards while Noxon snagged two passes for 44 yards. On defense the Miners had a bevy of standouts including Chase Federmeyer who was in on 10 tackles and Sam Hayward who totaled nine. Taylor Hart and Brandon Ennis also had good games in helping keep Elk Grove in check. The win for the Miners moved their seasonmark to 4-1.NU has a bye this week before opening SFL action Oct. 7 at Granite Bay. River Valley 28 Bear River 21 - River Valley's T.J. Dole scampered 68 yards in the fourth quarter for a touchdown on a fake punt to spell the difference in the Falcons' win at Bear River. The game was a see-saw battle as River Valley built a 21-0 lead before the Bruins rallied to make a game of things. Dole rushed for 205 yards and scored four touchdowns. The loss - the first for a Bear River JV team since the next to the last game of the 2008 season - dropped the Bruins to 4-1. Colfax JV 31 Davis 7 – Colfax bounced back from its first loss of the season by ruining Davis' homecoming celebration in a big way. Colfax quarterback Michael Wilson hit on 12 of 22 passes for 171 yards, ran for a pair of touchdowns and also booted a 39-yard field goal to help spark the Falcons. Colfax, 3-1 on the season, also received a touchdown run from Tanner Kane and Kyle Bryant. Both Jack Baldoni and Christopher Harshman each had four catches for Colfax. The Falcons play at Wheatland Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. Del Oro 42 Oakmont 14 - Michael Moore tossed a 34-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Wells and Jeff Setterlund returned a pass interception 55 yards to set up another score as the No. 1 ranked Golden Eagles won their fifth straight game. Dylan Kainrath added two more touchdowns for the winners while Johnathon Tuttle and Shane Peterson also added scores. Jake Noah, Jarhann Nargussi, Mason McCroy and Dan Becker (interception) led the defense. Placer 40 Woodland 16 - Placer picked up its first win of the season by using three pass interceptions and a balanced offense to take down the visiting Wolves. Todd Valliere had two pass picks and ran for one touchdown while Austin LaBleu ran for two TDs to spark the Hillmen. Zach Phillips added one interception and one TD. Logan Strange tossed two touchdown passes. Nate Durham and Hugo Lopez also scored for the Hillmen who host El Dorado on Friday. Frosh Placer 47 Woodland 32 - In a near one-man wrecking crew type effort, Cole Blackwell rushed 17 times for 332 yards and scored six touchdowns to lift the Hillmen (2-2) to the win. Placer led 34-16 at halftime and also received a big game from Ryan Gray who added 115 yards on 15 carries. As a team, Placer piled up 546 rushing yards. Austin Hess paced a ball-hawking defense with three interceptions.Frankie O'Neal added two more pass picks while Jake Watkins and Joshua Sweat each added one. Logan Markstein led all tacklers with nine. Del Oro 14 Oakmont 7 - Tanner Robison scored on a six-yard run on fourth down and also added the two-point conversion as the Golden Eagles (1-4) rallied past the Vikings for their first win of the season. Dustin Edwards also had a good game on offense for Del Oro while Bryce Beauchamp and Justin Yamine led the defense. Yuba City 20 Nevada Union 14 - The Miners were held to negative offensive yards and had over 100 yards in penalties as they suffered their first loss of the season. Mo Nieves tallied one of NU's touchdowns on a 50-yard run while Jerico Mendes picked a Honkers fumble and returned it 70 yards for another score. Yuba City improved to 4-0 with the win. Colfax 26 Davis 6 - The Falcons went on the road for the win and improved to 4-0. Colfax plays at Galt on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. River Valley 30 Bear River 12 - River Valley's Tino Caracciola rushed for 135 yards and scored four teedees as the Falcons downed the host Bruins. River Valley also recorded five qb sacks in the game. Bear River fell to 3-2 with the setback.
