In the next two weeks, league titles will be on the line in both the Pioneer Valley and Sierra Foothill leagues. Here’s a recap of last week’s action: JVs Colfax 41 Placer 19 - Tim Rawlins got the Colfax High JV football team off to a rousing start last Friday night in Auburn and the Falcons used his big special teams play to get on their way to a 41-19 Pioneer Valley League win over Placer. Rawlins, a call-up from the freshman squad three weeks ago, took last Friday’s opening kickoff back 77 yards for a touchdown and the Falcons never looked back in dousing the host Hillmen. Colfax followed its good start to build a 21-7 halftime lead and then after Placer closed the gap to 28-19 in the third quarter, the Falcons put the hammer down with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns. Colfax was led on offense by several different players as the Falcons spread the wealth around. Tanner Kane carried the ball 11 times for 80 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns on runs of four and three yards. Meanwhile, in the air, Colfax quarterback Michael Wilson, who went over the 1,000 yard passing mark two weeks ago, hit on 23 of 30 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, Colfax was led by Rawlins and Chas Reisinger from the safety spots, linebackers Jack Baldoni and Jake Mederios and Mario Margherita in the trenches. Colfax, now 7-1 on the season and 3-0 in Pioneer Valley League games, faces a tough Lincoln team on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The Zebras are 2-1 in PVL games with wins over Foothill and Placer and a last second 14-8 loss to Bear River last Friday. The win kept the Golden Eagles perfect on the season with a record of 8-0. More importantly, the victory boosted Del Oro’s Sierra Foothill League record to 3-0 and sets up Friday’s battle with second place Roseville (6-1, 2-1). Roseville stayed in the SFL title hunt by blasting Nevada Union, 42-15, last Friday. Del Oro entered Friday’s game with several key performers on the sidelines nursing injuries and when the visiting Grizzlies returned a Golden Eagle pass 45 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter for a 7-0 lead things looked bleak early on for the Black and Gold. On its ensuing possession after Granite Bay’s ear;y score, Del Oro caught fire as Jahann Nargussi, who would later depart because of an ankle injury, took a wildcat snap and went 60-yards for a score. Mason Humes booted the extra point to knot the game at 7-7-. Quarterback Michael Moore then got into the act for the Golden Eagles as he scored on a 17-yard touchdown run and then had another 31-yard scramble that led to a clutch 40-yard field goal just before halftime by Humes that made the score 17-7. In the second half, hard running from Johnathon Tuttle and Shane Peterson kept the Del Oro momentum rolling which helped lead to am 18-yard scoring aerial from Moore to Daniel Becker. Peterson then was in the spotlight as he scored Del Oro’s next two touchdowns – one on a fumble recovery after Granite Bay botched a Golden Eagles kickoff and the other on a 63-yard run. Defensive standouts for the Golden Eagles included Peterson, Jake Noah and Brian Leveille. SFL JV Football W L Del Oro 3 0 Roseville 2 1 Rocklin 2 1 N. Union 1 2 G.
