Hillmen Reach Top; Hand Unbeaten

Lincoln First Loss of Season, 21-14

Placer High’s JV football team went out and celebrated being moved to the No. 1 position of the foothillpreps.com’s weekly top five poll the best way it knew how – by traveling to Lincoln and handing the 7-0 Zebras a 21-14 defeat.

The win, Placer’s 6th straight, moves the Hillmen’s record in the Pioneer Valley League to 4-0. Placer and Colfax, both 4-0 in PVL games, collide this Friday in Colfax at 5:30 p.m.

Del Oro, meanwhile, last week’s new No. 2 team, also made a claim to possibly be considered for the poll’s No. 1 ranking.

Meeting a 7-0 Woodcreek team last Friday in Loomis, the Golden Eagles came out with a vengeance and rolled the Timberwolves, 40-13. By the way, Woodcreek handed Placer its lone loss of the season. 35-16, back on Sept. 19.

Nevada Union’s Miners bounced back from its first loss of the season by “out mudding” Laguna Creek, 28-12. The win moves the Mitch Giles-coached Miners back up a notch to No. 3 has the season comes down to the final two weeks.

In the frosh ranks, Del Oro and Nevada Union both continued to flourish as the Golden Eagles moved to 8-0 with a 41-7 romp over Woodcreek and NU improved to 7-0 with a 50-16 win over Laguna Creek.

This Week’s Rankings:

JV Top Five

  • Placer (7-1) – Hillmen will take six-game win streak and 4-0 Pioneer Valley League mark into Colfax Friday night.

  • Del Oro (6-2) – Golden Eagles make poll statement with 40-13 rout of previously undefeated Woodcreek, the lone team to defeat Placer this season.

  • Nevada Union (7-1) – Muddy playing conditions at Elk Grove Stadium didn’t faze Miners in 28-12 thumping of Laguna Creek. Get Elk Grove at home Friday.

  • Colfax (5-3) – Falcons slip one spot after “only” defeating 5-1-1 Highlands team 27-14. Armchair quarterbacks in the “Above The Fog and Below The Snow” city are pondering if “Hitch” will have any tricks up his sleeve this Friday night.

  • Bear River (3-5) – Bruins were outgained by visiting Mesa Verde but followed a balanced team effort for a 20-13 win, its first in PVL games.

Frosh Big Little Five

  • Del Oro (8-0) – Golden Eagle faithful, suffering through a 2-6 varsity campaign, probably can’t wait until this group ascends to the varsity ranks.

  • Nevada Union (8-0) – Delta Valley League frosh title on the line Thursday at NU when Elk Grove calls on the Miners.

  • Colfax (5-2) – Falcons, 3-1 in PVL games, will try and keep hopes of a PVL title alive when it hosts Placer (3-1) Thursday.

  • Bear River (6-2) – Bruins are 50 seconds and four points away from being undefeated.

  • Placer (4-4) – Hillmen - with do-it-all Hayden Goodwin leading the way - rallied past Lincoln, 14-13, last week.
