Feb. 20, 2011 Weather wins out in NCAL Tourney The basketball gods weren't shining on Nevada County Athletic League boys teams this past weekend. With 22 large and small school 8th and 7th grade teams paired up for the NCAL's season ending tournament, inclement weather - which pounded the Grass Valley-Nevada City area from Thursday thru Saturday - won out and forced tournament officials to cancel the 2011 tourney on Saturday morning. The tournament was able to get off the ground on Wednesday afternoon as first round home site games were able to be played. However, with school cancelled at Nevada Union High on both Thursday and Friday, havoc prevailed with the rescheduling of the tournament. A contingency tourney schedule was put into place for both gyms at NU on Saturday but a late arriving storm which hit the local area on Saturday morning forced the tournament to be derailed. "It was a matter of safety for the teams trying to get here," said Dan Murphey of the NU boys basketball staff who was helping coordinate the touenament. "It's too bad that we had to cancel, I know a lot of players were looking forward to it." As far as the NCAL regular season went, Weimar Hills (10-2) slipped past Seven Hills (9-3) to win the 8th grade league title while Magnolia and Union Hill, both 11-1, shared the 7th grade crown.
