Miner JVs rout Monterey Trail, 47-0

Nevada Union's JV football team made it two straighty wins in Elk Grove last Friday night by rolling to a 47-0 whitewashing of host Monterey Trail.

Now 2-1 on the season, the Miners followed a stellar effort from quarterback Kyle Cota. Cota threw for 136 yards and three touchdowns on the evening including a pair that went to Ian Davis and another which was hauled in by Miguel Espinosa for the third tally.


Michael Buonarati shined in the rushing department with three carries for 67 yards and two touchdowns while Stone Sander also was impressive as he toted the ball seven times for 36 yards and another score.

On the defensive side, Cameron Townsend, Jimmy Klauer and Bobby Curtis all had eight tackles for NU. Espinosa also had five solo tackles for the winners.

NU coach Chris Cota heaped nothing but praise on the effort by the Miners.

"Our kids really played well," said Chris Cota. "Defensively, they only had four first downs and two of those were by penalty. Other than that, that's all our defense gave up. "Overall, we played well and executed real well. It was a good game for us."

NU hosts Chico on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Hooper Stadium.

Del Oro JV 35 Clovis West 14- The Golden Eagles survived a three-hour bus trip to Fresno then went out and defeated one of the premier Central Section programs.

Brandon Monroe tallied three touchdowns including one that covered 80 yards. Both Brenden Montoya and Troy Kline also scored touchdowns.

Del Oro (2-0) plays at Oak Ridge Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Colfax JV 16 Union Mine 0 - Austin Perry and Henry Freer each scored touchdowns to lead the Falcons past the Diamondbacks. Colfax, now 1-2 on the season, has a bye this week and then resumes action on Sept. 24 when they host Davis.

Bear River 35, Golden Sierra 7- The Grizzlies took an early 7-0 lead, but the Bruins stormed back to notch the rout. Michael Raigoza ran for two touchdowns and recovered a fumble for another score as the Bruins improved to 3-0 on the year. Andrew Reiss and Travis McKnight added touchdown runs while Hayden Macklin and Zach Winter led the defensive effort.

Frosh

Colfax Frosh 28 Union Mine 0 - Tanner Kane tallied touchdowns on runs of 60, 65 and three yards to help lead the Falcons (2-1) to the win.

Chancey Trentman, who also had a pass interception in the contest, scored the Falcons other touchdown on a 65 yard pass from Michael Wilson. The Falcons will play the Rio Vista JVs Friday in Rio Vista at 5:30.

Lincoln (Stockton) 33 Nevada Union 14 - NU led early but couldn't hol;d off the host Trojans in the non-conference game played in Stockton.

Brandon Lopez had a big game for the Miners before leaving the contest in the second half with an injury. Lopez opened the game with a 65 yard run and went in from two yards out on the next play to make the score 6-0.

NU stuffed Lincoln and on their second possession and scored again, when Jason Murray pounded it in from four yards out. Jack Freele hit Nick Hastert for the two-point conversion to make the score 14-0 in the first quarter. 

Lincoln came back with a long drive to make the score 14-6 at the half. NU held Lincoln at the goal line to end the half.

Lopez car
ried the ball 12 times in the first half for 179 yards, but was unable to play in the second half due to an injury. 

Murray sparked the defense with eight solo tackles while Taylor Hart and Dylan McClure collected six stops each.

El Camino 21 Bear River 6 - After a close first half, the Bruins couldn't keep up with the Eagles in the road loss at Sacramento. Bear River, now 1-2, travels to Woodcreek Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Sutter 21 Placer 7 - The visiting Huskies from the North Section shut down the Hillmen offense to get the win. Placer, 1-1 hosts Casa Roble Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Auburn.
