Miners' JVs Keep Rolling
Nevada Union'a Boddi Winegar (11) breaks through to block a Valley punt in action from last Friday's NU-Valley JV game. The Miners built a big 37-0 halftime lead on their way to an easy 58-0 blanking of the Vikings. The win gives NU a perfect 6-0 record. Oct. 20, 2008 NU JVs Too Much For Valley, 58-0 The Nevada Union JV football team is making things look easy these days. The Miners rolled to their sixth consecutive victory on the season and opened Delta Valley Conference play with a runaway 58-0 win over Valley Friday night at Consumnes River College in Sacramento. Nevada Union piled up 302 yards rushing on offense as the Miners burst out to a 37-0 lead by halftime and were not threatened the rest of the way. Tyler Prince tallied two touchdowns while Robin Callas, Brock Kraus and John Ettlin each added solo scores for the Miners. Ettlin led the Miners in rushing with 115 yards. Josh Cena also had a busy evening for the iners as he returned an interception 22 yards for a score, booted a pair of field goals and also kicked two extra points. Also playing well for the Miners on defense were Riley Murray, Jake Tilly, Nick Flores, and Kodi Winthal. NU returns home to play Franklin of Elk Grove this Friday at 5:30 p.m. Colfax JVs 34 Mesa Verde 13 – Colfax’s Falcons won their third straight game to improve to 3-0 in Pioneer Valley League play with the win over the Mavericks. Colfax quarterback Avery Baccala tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Chase Mosier and another to Josh Moreno as the Falcons rallied from a 13-12 halftime deficit to ease past the Mavericks. Now 3-3 overall on the season, Colfax received a 135-yard rushing effort from Conner Brown and 105 more on the ground from Moreno. Brown also scored on a 63-yard run for the Falcons while Moreno added a 60-yard scoring tally. Baccala was 7 of 11 passing for 90 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Mosier caught three balls for 53 yards and pair of scores while AlanMeyers had two catches for 34 yards. Granite Bay JV 14 Del Oro 7 – On a night when the Eagles lost two fumbles inside Granite Bay’s five-yard line, the Grizzlies used a touchdown with just over two minutes to play to break a 7-7 tie and take the Sierra Foothill League opener. Del Oro had taken a 7-0 advantage in the second quarter on a 20-yard pass from Max Magelby to Cameron Saldano. However, Granite Bay used a long screen pass just before halftime to tie the count at 7-7. In the second half, Del Oro was hurt by some untimely penalties despite some strong defensive work from Kenny Andri and Rock Slatter. Now 4-2 on the season, Del Oro will play at Roseville on Friday night. Placer JV 42, Capital Christian 13 – The Hillmen continued to roll as running back Josh Turney piled up 235 yards rushing and tallied three touchdowns as the Hillmen (5-1) bombed the Cougars in the non-league game. Fullback Cody Barger added two more touchdowns for Placer while running back Darin Centi added another 42-yard tally for six points. Defensively, cornerback Cameron Hennen had two interceptions and two pass deflections to lead Placer. Inside linebacker Cameron Mitchell led the Hillmen in tackles. Whitney JV 21 Bear River 19 – A late game field goal try by the Bruins fell short in the tough two-point loss to the Wildcats. Bear River rushed for 274 yards in the game including 101 from Chris Carcido, 92 from Sean O’Brien and 81 from Sam Houston. O’Brien also had two touchdowns for the Bruins while Carcido added another. After O’Brien’s second score of the night, which brought Bear River within two points of the Wildcats, Joey Reina intercepted a pass to give the Bruins one last try at the win. However, on fourth down from the Whitney four-yard line, a Bear River field goal try was wide right. Bear River is now 0-2 in PVL games and 2-4 overall. |
