Comeback Win

Miners' JVs Rally For 29-28 Win

 

Nevada Union's JV football team is 3-0 today but by the skin of its teeth.

The Miners needed a big sack from Michael Champagne and Tyler Pitts in the game's final minute to hold off the visitors from Stockton for a 29-28 win last Friday at Hooper Stadium.

The Titans held leads through much of the first half at 22-14 and by a 28-14 count in the third quarter.

Robin Callas got NU rolling with a 5-yard touchdown to start the game and followed with another touchdown run in the second half. Callas also added a key two-point conversion later in the game.

Brock Krause threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Max Talbott while Josh Cena ran for another touchdown.

On defense the standouts for NU included Boddi Winegar (6 solo tackles, 9 assists), Cena (7 solo tackles, 2 assists), Taylor barney (2 tackles for losses) and Tyler Prince (2 tackles for losses).

Woodcreek 28 Bear River JVs 0 - Bear River's JVs fell to 1-2 on the season with the setback at Woodcreek. Three lost turnovers - one interception and two fumbles - hurt the Bruins dearly as they trailed just 7-0 at halftime and were outgained only 173-107 in total yardage.

Sean O'Brien had a good game for Bear River as he rushed 15 times for 61 yards and also led all tacklers on defense.

Also playing well on defense were Michael Wirth, Joey Reina and Craig Hacklord.

Bear River plays at Colfax Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Union Mine JVs 7 Colfax 6 - Colfax had a two-point conversion try stopped with less than a minuteand a half to play in the tough loss to the undefeated Diamondbacks.

The loss dropped Colfax’s season record to 0-3 with all three setbacks coming against teams which combined are currently 9-0 on the season.

Union Mine scored a first half touchdown and converted the point after via kick and then made the lead holdup through the remai8nder of the second and third quarters before the Falcons came up with some staunch defensive play in the final stanza.

The Falcons then put together their best offensive march of the evening and finally reached the end zone on quarterback Avery Baccala’s one-yard scoring sneak with jus 1:17 left in the contest.

Colfax coach Rob Hitchcock then called for a two-point conversion but the Falcons were stopped at the half-yard line on their attempt.

Josh Moreno led Colfax’s offense with 97 yards rushing on 15 carries while Connor Brown gained 49 yards on 16 packs, Baccala contributed 16 yards on three carries and Austin Brown had one carry for 12 yards.

In the passing department, Baccala was 8 for 11 passing and 57 yards, Moreno had four catches for 28 yards and Austin Brown two grabs for 21 more yards.

On defense, Austin Fitzhugh, Brennan Holoman, Connor Sullivan, Kyle Kotey, Connor Sullivan, Danny Walker, Austin Leal and Jake Karbowski all played well on defense.

Colfax now opens Pioneer Valley League play Friday night against Bear River. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Falcons’ Marson Stadium.

In other JV action around the PVL last weekend, Lincoln’s JVs improved to 3-0 with a 28-24 win over Monterey Trail; Placer rolled past Casa Roble, 55-29; El Dorado fell to Golden Sierra, 12-0; Whitney topped Valley, 34-13 and Mesa Verde fell to Oakmont, 25-13. 

Del Oro JVs 24 Enochs 14 - A pair of big plays within a 90-second span of the second quarter helped propel the Del Oro JV football team to its third win of the season last Friday night.

Trailing visiting Enochs of Modesto, 7-6 and with the clock running down in the first half, Del Oro used a 32-yard touchdown jaunt by Kenny Andri and a 37-yard fumble return for another score by Max Magelby within the final 1:30 of the half to get the Golden Eagles on their way to a 26-14 win.

The two big Del Oro scores proved to be pivotal in the contest as following Del Oro taking its 19-7 halftime advantage, the visitors came right back and whittled the lead to 19-14.

Del Oro then put the game away with a six-yard run by Andri early in the fourth quarter. A 19-yard pass from Magelby to Cameron Saldano set up Del Oro’s final score.

Enochs used an early touchdown to take a 7-0 lead before a 25-yard pass from Magelby to Brandon Acuna set up Cody O’Sullivan’s one-yard touchdown plunge that trimmed the margin to 7-6.

Del Oro’s defensive standouts in the win were Magelby,  who also added a long pass interception return along with his fumble runback, Acuna, Rock Slater and Dan Seaman.

Del Oro will risk its 3-0 record on Saturday with a game on the road against Merced. The contest will be played at Atwater High School and begin at 5:15 p.m.
