(obfoto.com) Oct. 6. 2008 Colfax JVs handle Bear River, 37-14 A back-breaking 85-yard pass interception return for a touchdown just before halftime by Colfax’s Jake Karbowski helped fire up the Falcons’ JV football team to a 37-14 Pioneer Valley League win over Bear River. Playing in rainy conditions at Colfax’s Marson Stadium last Friday, the Falcons were holding on to a 14-7 lead and trying to keep the Bruins out of the end zone as the clock showed less than two minutes to play in the first half. However, Karbowski squelched the Bruins’ scoring attempt when he stepped in front of a Joey Lavelle pass and returned it 85 yards up the sideline, breaking two tackles along the way, for six points and a 20-6 Colfax cushion at the break. Colfax running back Josh Moreno had a big game as he picked up 182 yards rushing on 14 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns, one on a 26-yard run and another on a 19-yard reception from quarterback Avery Baccala. Baccala also had a strong game for the Falcons as he connected on 8 of 10 passes for 110 yards and three touchdowns including a pair of Chase Mosier from one and six yards out. Colfax also scored its final points in the game on a 26-yard field goal by Austin Leal in the fourth quarter. Playing well on defense for the Falcons included Karbowski, Brennan Holman, Leal, Grayson Crowley, Alex Chaney and Conner Sullivan. Bear River’s Sam Houston scored one of the Bruins’ touchdowns on a 70-yard kickoff return. Colfax, now 1-3 on the season, plays at Whitney Friday at 7:30 p.m. Merced 21 Del Oro JV 13 - The road proved to be tough last Saturday for the Del Oro JV football team. Traveling to Atwater to meet the Merced Bears in a non-league battle, Del Oro fell behind by three touchdowns before a late game rally fell short in an eventual 21-13 setback. Del Oro will now try and get back on the win trail this Friday when they face an always tough Elk Grove squad. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Eagle Stadium. Using its speed and quickness, Merced’s JVs built a 14-0 halftime lead and extended it to 21-0 before the Golden Eagles woke up. A touchdown run from Cody O’Sullivan got Del Oro on the scoreboard in the third quarter and then in the fourth stanza quarterback Max Magelby connected with Brandon Acuna on a 57-yard scoring toss that trimmed the margin to 21-13. Del Oro had another shot at the Bears when Cameron Saldano recovered a Golden Eagles onside kick following the second touchdown but the Bears defense stiffened and held on for the win NU JVs 36 Natomas 20 – In a game played in the rain in Sacramento on Friday, the Miners built a 26-6 halftime lead and then cruised past the Nighthawks to go 4-0 on the season.
