Bear River JV defenders, cardinal jerseys, defend a pass attemp for Colfax's Kyle Bryant, far right. Action came from last Friday's Pioneer Valley League game won by the Falcons, 28-7. Nov. 7, 2011 Colfax, Del Oro JVs Lay Claim to League Crowns As successful as the Colfax High football program has been over the past 15 seasons, it’s been awhile since a Falcons’ JV team has hung up a championship banner. That changed, however, last Friday night at Lake of the Pines. Playing an undefeated Bear River team that hadn’t lost a league JV game since the 2008 season, the Colfax JVs answered when push came to shove and emerged with a convincing 28-7 victory over the Bruins. The win capped an outstanding 9-1 overall season for the Falcons and wrapped up the outright Pioneer Valley League crown for Colfax with a perfect 5-0 mark in league. The PVL title for the Falcons is believed to be only the second league crown won by a Colfax JV team since 2000. Colfax had won three straight Golden Empire League JV crowns (1996-97-98) under coach Rob Hitchcock and then added another in 2004. For Colfax, the Falcons went into halftime leading just 7-0 after a 17-yard touchdown run by Tanner Kane with 4:58 to play in the first quarter accounted for the lone scoring in the opening two quarters. But if the Falcons were looking for a kick-start to begin the third quarter, they received it when Tim Rawlins took the Bruins’ second half kickoff at his own 14-yard line, cut to his left and then darted untouched up the sideline to complete an 86-yard scoring play. Michael Wilson’s extra point boot pushed the Falcons into a 14-0 advantage. Following Rawlins’ score, the Falcons picked up fine defensive work by Jonathan Walker, Mason Banish, Wes Woodward and Mario Margherita to force the Bruins into a three and out. On Colfax’s ensuing possession following the Bruins punt, the Falcons covered 52 yards in eight plays capped by Wilson finding Woodward who went up high to nab a nine yard scoring pass and put the Falcons up, 21-0. The big plays in the scoring march was a 15-yard run by Jake Medeiros and a 17-yard pass from Wilson to Kyle Bryant. Bear River then countered Colfax’s score with their lone touchdown of the evening when Caleb Johnson broke off a 39-yard scoring run to cut the lead to 21-7 . However, the Falcons then put the game out of reach when Kane busted free on a 41-yard touchdown jaunt with 1:43 to play in the third that made the count, 28-7, Falcons. In the fourth quarter, Colfax kept the Bruins in check with Alex Nevarez coming up with an interception and Medeiros and Jack Baldoni each adding sacks. Wilson finished the game 13 of 22 passing for 134 yards and one touchdown. Bryant had three catches for 41 yards while Woodward hauled in a pair for 22 yards and Medeiros two for 19 yards. Rawlins, Chris Harshman and Bailey Bean all had one catch apiece. Kane was the leading rusher for Colfax with 106 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns.
