A potent ground game laid down the framework for the Nevada Union JV football team to notch a 24-12 win over Rocklin last Friday at Hooper Stadium.

The Miners, led by Robin Callas, Nick Reyes and Josh Cena who each tallied touchdowns, grinded out over 350 yards rushing in the win against the Thunder of the Sierra Foothill League.

Truckee 42 Colfax JVs 14 -  Colfax fell to 0-2 in the non-league loss at home against the Wolverines.

“We made some mistakes and they were quick to capitalize,” said Colfax coach Rob Hitchcock whose Falcons were tied at 14-14 in the first quarter and trailed just 21-14 at halftime.

While Colfax had some blocking and protection woes that allowed the visitors to time after time put the Falcons into long yardage situations, the Wolverines were also following a superlative effort from running back Mitch Nelson.

Nelson personally accounted for 31 of Truckee’s points as he tallied four touchdowns and was perfect on all seven of his extra point kicks.

The Falcons were led by running back Josh Moreno who totaled 123 yards on 13 carries. Moreno also scored on a 35-yard touchdown run and caught a two-point conversion pass from Avery Baccala.

A 20-yard scoring pass from Baccala to Tyler Ingram accounted for Colfax’s other touchdown in the contest.

Baccala was 8 for 13 passing for 84 yards in the game with the one touchdown and one interception.

Top defensive players for the Falcons were Tyler Bourget and Kyle Kotey.

The Falcons travel to Diamond Springs Friday to play an undefeated Union Mine (2-0) team at 5:30 p.m.
