JV Roundup: NU Picks Up Unusual Win

The record book shows that Nevada Union’s JV football team is now 5-0 after picking up a forfeit win from Franklin of Stockton last Friday night.

However, while some forfeits are awarded because schools sometimes are not able to field a squad because of injuries or grades, the Franklin miscue was somewhat surprising.

To put it bluntly,  the charter bus service that Franklin had hired to transport the JV squad from Stockton to Grass Valley, made a wrong turn.

“They called about 5 p.m. and said they were lost and not going to make it,” said NU freshman coach Gary Sharpe about the ordeal.

“We told them that we would hold the game up for a while until they got here but they were in South Tahoe,” said Sharpe. “Instead of coming up I-80 they went up Highway 50.”

NU will try and stay on the win track Friday when they play at Valley in a game which will be played at Consumnes River College. Game time is set for 5 p.m.

Bear River JV 37 Lindhurst 12 -  Running back Sam Houston rushed for 125 yards and three TDs on 12 carries to lead the Bruins past the Blazers in a non-league game.

Sean O’Brien and Jacob Harris each had 1-yard TD runs for Bear River while quarterback Joey Levelle hit on five of six passes for 53 yards.

Joey Reina led the receivers with two catches for 34 yards.

On defense, linebacker Michael Wirth led the Bruins defensively with seven tackles (three solo, four assisted) while O’Brien contributed six stops. Tyler Quirarte and John Cooke also played well.

Bear River, now 2-3 on the season, hosts Whitney in a Pioneer Valley League game Friday at 5:30 p.m..

Colfax JVs 34 Whitney 32 – In a wild JV contest, the Falcons rallied from a 14-6 halftime deficit to outgun the Wildcats in the second half.

Colfax running backs Josh Moreno (12x178) and Conner Brown (14x87) were a tough 1-2 rushing punch for the Falcons who improved to 2-0 in Pioneer Valley League games. Moreno scored on runs of 59 and 28 yards while Brown added a one-yard plunge and a key two-point conversion run.

Quarterback Avery Baccala was also a factor for the Falcons as he hit on 10 of 14 passes for 116 yards including touchdowns of 26 yards to Alan Meyers and 22 yards to Chase Mosier.

Defensive standouts in the win included Alex Chaney, Grayson Crowley, Brennan Holman, Austin Leal and Jake Karbowski. Drawing plaudits for their work on the offensive line were Larry Cabodi, Kyle Kotey, David Wasko, Ben Schuler, Jose Mariscal and William Avalos.
