ALL TIED UP - Nevada Union and Granite Bay kicked off the 2010 Sierra Foothill League JV football season by battling to a 17-17 tie. The Miners, 4-1-1 on the season, play at Del Oro this Friday night at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 10, 2010 SFL JV Openers Prove Exciting For Fans It appears that this season’s Sierra Foothill League JV football race has all the makings of a battle that could go right down to the final weekend of the season. At least that what last Friday night’s SFL openers sure seem to indicate. For instance: In Loomis, Del Oro welcomed back the return of starting quarterback Zach LaBar and he made his presence felt by throwing for 255 yards and a pair of touchdowns in helping the Golden Eagles hold off a determined Rocklin squad, 27-21. Meanwhile, in Grass Valley, Nevada Union’s Miners scored a late touchdown and appeared to have victory in its grasp but visiting Granite Bay connected on a 38-yard field goal as time expired to forge a 17-17 tie with the hosts. Per CIF rules regarding JV and Frosh games, no overtime was played. And in another tight SFL game on Friday, Roseville held inside its 10-yard line to hang on for a 34-27 win over Woodcreek. Here’s a recap of last weekend’s JV action: Del Oro 27 Rocklin 21 at Loomis – The Golden Eagles and Thunder went back and forth at each other in a game that the hosts didn’t secure until Troy Kline broke through for a key late game sack on Rocklin’s quarterback. Tied 21-21 in the 4th quarter, the game winning touchdown came when LaBar found Tyler Wharton on a five-yard scoring pass. Earlier, Del Oro used a 20-yard touchdown pass from LaBar to Aaron Richman to take the game’s opening 7-0 margin. After Rocklin knotted the count at 7-7, Del Oro’s Brandon Monroe scored on a 7-yard run to make it 14-7. Monroe, who also had a 93-yard kick return for a touchdown called back via penalty, scored Del Oro’s third touchdown on a 17-yard tally. Del Oro coach Jerry Van Lengen was pleased with the efforts of his offensive line which include Justin Voss, Dalton Hudek, Dylan Jenson, Steve Smith and Jared Catalano. The win for Del Oro, now 5-1, was especially satisfying because Rocklin holds a win over Oak Ridge, the lone team to defeat the Golden Eagles this season. Del Oro hosts Nevada Union Friday in Loomis starting at 5:30 p.m. Nevada Union 17, Granite Bay 17 – Kyle Cota connected with Ian Davis on a 31-yard touchdown pass with 27 seconds to play to give NU’s Miners a 17-14 lead over Granite Bay. However, the Grizzlies got a long kickoff return from Aaron Knapp and then after an incomplete pass, the visirtors booted the game tying field goal with just nine-tenths of a second left to tie the game and force the stalemate. “I can't say enough good about the effort from our kids,” said NU JV coach Chris Cota said. “We played our hearts out. It was a team effort from every single kid.” Bear River 28, Placer 13 — In a strong showing in their Pioneer Valley League opener, Bear River took advantage of four Hillmen turnovers to post the road win and improve to 6-0 on the season. Bear River quarterback Dylan Smith rushed for two touchdowns while Cody Heard and Michael Raigoza added one each. Jake Savoie led the defense by recovering two fumbles while Austin Dowling had an interception and forced a fumble. Heard also had a big one-handed interception. Placer scored both its touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Casey Yunk passed to Tyler Lipsmeyer for one and then took over a quarterback sneak for the other. Bear River (6-0, 1-0) hosts Center Friday while Placer (4-1-1, 0-1) plays at Lincoln. Both games start at 5:30 p.m. Center 7 Colfax 6 – The Falcons had their three-game wining streak snapped when they had a drive stalled at the Cougars 5-yard line as time expired. The Falcons had held a 6-0 lead at halftime after a six-yard scoring run by Austin Perry. The running of Perry and the passing of Clay Southerland ignited Colfax’s offense in the opening half. However, Center put together its lone concentrated drive of the night in the fourth quarter when it marched 88 yards in 15 plays and tied the game on a five-yard run by James Tate. The Cougars then converted the ensuing extra point for the one-point lead. Colfax, with less than a minute to play, then covered 55 yards in four plays but the potential game winning drive was halted at the five-yard line.
