Jr. Falcons pick up three more wins

The winning ways continued last Saturday in Sacramento Youth Football League play for the Colfax Jr. Falcons’ youth teams.

Playing the visiting Davis Jr. Blue Devils at Marson Stadium, the Jr. Falcons posted three wins and in the fourth game lost an exciting overtime contest.

The Jr. Falcons will continue their SYFL schedule this Saturday with another set of home games when the Center Jr. Cougars visit.

Game times are 11 a.m. for the Jr. Peewees; 1 p.m. for the Peewees; 3 p.m. for the Jr. Midgets and 5 p.m. for the Midgets.

Here’s a recap of last week’s action:

Jr. Falcon Jr. Midgets 26 Davis 12 – Outstanding defensive play from Justin Kotey, John Hayes, Marcus Hoogendyk, Corey Schlittenhart, Jake Medeiros and Chancey Trentman keyed a pivotal stretch of this contest when Colfax, now 3-1,  was able to pull away to break the game open.

Leading 16-12 late in the first half, the Colfax defense turned back a Davis fourth down and two yards to go try deep in their own territory. Following the change in possession, Trentman jaunted in from 34 yards away for the touchdown. Henry Freer’s conversion run then upped the count to 23-12 Colfax.

Colfax had opened the scoring in the first quarter after Kotey had pounced on a Davis fumble at the Davis 27. Colfax then mounted a short scoring march that Freer capped by going over from two yards away.

After Davis had taken a 12-8 lead, Colfax got a nice drive going with Michael Wilson’s 36-yard pass to Freer eventually setting up an eight-yard run by Austin Perry and a 16-12 Colfax lead.

Perry also booted a 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Also contributing tough defensive play in the win were Robbie Lopez, Mario Margherita, Josie Weber, Niall Gow and Sam Klar who intercepted a pass.

Jr. Falcons Peewees 24 Davis 19 – A late game fourth quarter defensive stand ignited by Jack Baldoni, Ian Gassaway, Blake Rawlings, Beau Baggett, Matt Blackburn and Jeremy Cabodi helped the Peewees preserve its 24-19 win over the Blue Devils.

In a see-saw battle which went back and forth the entire afternoon, Colfax’s Timothy Rawlins tallied four touchdowns on runs of 56, 38, 1 and 40 yards but it was the Falcons’ ability to hold Davis out of the end zone in the final stanza which was the key to the win.

Now 3-1 on the season, Baldoni finished the contest with a season high 12 tackles while Rawlings followed with nine and Gassaway and Rawlins added seven apiece.

Other strong efforts in the win came from Travis Mullican who contributed a touchdown saving tackle on a Davis kickoff return and from Dalton Bannister. Rawlins, Anthony Severson and Baldoni all added fumble recoveries for the Falcons.

Jr. Falcon Midgets 26 Davis 0 – Nolan Karbowski scored three touchdowns, one on a nifty 60-yard punt return, and Austin Young fired a 22-yard scoring pass to Zac Coffman as the Jr. Falcons midgets team improved to 3-1 on the season with a shutout win.

Like the other Colfax teams which won on Saturday, the Midgets also had several sterling defensive efforts.

Hunter Owens, Sam Quinlan, Michael Rawlins, and David Wood continually srifled attempted runs by the Davis offense.

Meanwhile, Luke Beninga contributed a touchdown saving tackle while Dakota Reagan, Austin Pachaud and Eric Accomazzo repeatedly put pressure on the Blue Devils quarterback.

Also contributing key tackles were Roger Lillie Brett Fowler, Shawn Rawlins, Owens and Wood.

Davis Jr. Peewees 7 Jr. Falcons 0 – Locked in a scoreless duel for four quarters, the visitors used a 10-yard scoring run on the first play of overtime to dent the scoreboard.

Colfax then went on the offensive but on third down a pass was intercepted to end the closely fought battle.

Having good all-around games for the Jr. Falcons were Zane McDade, Braydon Bean, Mason Ahrens, Marc Avila, Skyler Saavedra, J.T. Hobbs and Anthony Griggs.

Bean, Ahrens and Griggs all came up with fumble recoveries to squelch Davis drives during the contest.
