Jr. Falcons grid teams sweep Highlands

It was a banner day for the Colfax Jr. Falcons football program as the local youth gridders saw all four of their teams post shutout victories on the road last week at Highlands.

The Jr. Peewees started the day off with a 6-0 blanking of the Scots before the Peewees checked in with a 32-0 win.

The Jr. Midgets then posted a 26-0 victory for the third shutout of the afternoon. Finally, the Colfax midgets capped the day off with a 36-0 triumph.

The Jr. Falcons return home this Saturday to host the Vista Del Lago teams from the Folosm area.

Here’s a recap of last week’s action:

Colfax Jr. Falcons Midgets 36 Highlands 0 -  Hunter Owens tallied four touchdowns and quarterback Austin Young connected with Zac Coffman on another scoring toss to help lead the Colfax Midgets to the victory.

Owens set up his first touchdown of the day after Colfax took the opening kickoff and the Jr. Falcons halfback tore off runs of 28 and 20 yards.

Nolan Karbowski also had a big day rushing and also added a 25-yard touchdown gallop while Young also booted three extra point kicks on the afternoon.

Coffman contributed a pass interception to the defense while Austin Pachaud, Roger Lillie, Sam Quinlan, David Wood and Dakota Reagan were standouts on defense. Lillie also had a scoring reception from Young but the six points didn’t count because it came when the game was being played under the running clock rule.

Jr. Falcons Jr. Midgets 26 Highlands 0 – Strong defensive showings from Justin Kotey, Marcus Hoogendyk, Corey Schlittenhart, and Evan Critchfield were all in on multiple tackles to help the Falcons kept the host Scots in check.

The Jr. Falcons got the scoring started when they used a nifty 13-play drive which consumed all the time in the first period. Michael Wilson’s one-yard quarterback sneak accounted for the touchdown but it was the running of Henry Freer, Chancey Trentman, Tanner Kane, Jake Medeiros and R.J. Hurley which sparked the drive.

After an injury to teammate Joey Thomas, the Jr. Falcons dedicated the game to him and then responded with strong running from Freer and Kane that led to an eventual 15-yard dash by Trentman for the touchdown. Wilson’s extra point kick made the score 14-0 Colfax.

Medeiros and Trentman then added two more touchdowns in the second quarter to keep the offense rolling for Colfax. On defense, Critchfield and Jasmine Belser added sacks.

Jr. Falcon Peewees 32 Highlands 0

Jack Baldoni’s fumble recovery on the opening kickoff set the tone for the game as the Peewees throttled the Scots.

Baldoni’s big early play helped lead to Timothy Rawlins’ 39-yard scoring run that the put the Falcons up 8—0 after Marcus Jackson’s extra point kick.

The elusive running of Rawlins helped the Jr. Falcons build their margin to 20-0 later in the quarter as the Jr. Falcons back added scoring runs of 37 and 33 yards.

Highlands then began a strong push in the closing minutes of the opening stanza but a fumble recovery by Jory Weber squelched the drive.

Two plays after the Highlands turnover, Rawlins burst 55-yards for the falcons’ fourth touchdown of the opening quarter.

After a scoreless second period, the Falcons got on the scoreboard again in the third canto when Matt Blackburn capped a long march by scoring a touchdown from  six yards out. Colfax’s  scoring drive was highlighted by the rushes of Blackburn, Travis Mullican, Sammy LaHaie and Sage Garten.

Colfax was able to keep its shutout thanks mainly to the stout defensive play of Baldoni, Beau Baggett, Travis Escobar, Weber and Ian Gassaway.

Jr. Peewees 6 Highlands 0

After a scoreless first half, the Jr. Falcons put what would prove to be the winning points on the scoreboard when Dallan Trentman swept around end from six yards away with 6:50 to play in the third quarter.

Trentman and Ryland Heimann were the top ground gainers on the afternoon for the Jr. Peewees while the defense was keyed by J.T. Hobbs who made a nice game saving tackle in the closing minutes after Highlands executed a nifty double-reverse.

Also standing out defensively in the win were Trentman, who added a pair of tackles for losses, Heimann, Braydon Bean, Skyler Saavedra and Zane McDade who checked in with six individual tackles.
