NU Midgets, Jr. Midgets Top Zebras

Nevada Union’s Jr. Miners notched three wins last weekend in five SYFC games played on the road against the Lincoln Jr. Zebras.

The host Zebras started off the day with triumphs in the Mighty Mites game, 33-0, and the Jr. Peewees, 13-0, before NU turned the tide.

The Jr. Miners then produced a 13-0 verdict in the Peewees game, a 28-0 win in the Jr. Midgets contest and a 23-6 drubbing of the hosts in the Midgets game.

Here’s a recap of reported scores:

NU Jr. Midgets 28 Lincoln 0 – The Jr. Miners stayed on the win trail by shutting down the Zebras for their fourth consecutive victory and their third straight shutout.

Johnny Callas got the Miners started off on the right foot by returning the opening kickoff 80 yards for a score. Callas went on to add two more rushing touchdowns and finished the game with 95 yards on the ground.

Ian Davis added another touchdown for the Miners who ran well all afternoon behind fine offensive line blocking from Hart, Dahneke, Quintana, Perry and Ararta.

Mo Nieves and Brandon Lopez both also played well on offense for the winners while Davis chipped in on defense with eight tackles and a pass interception.

Michael Tipton added six tackles for NU while Elliot Roberts added five tackles and two sacks. Jason Murray and Chase Federmeyer also stood out in the win.

NU, now 4-1 on the season, plays an inter-divisional game Saturday when they host Roseville.

NU Midgets 23 Lincoln 6 – A strong running game ignited by Nate Dickinson and Tanner Vallejo and pinpoint passing of Kyle Cota helped guide the NU Midgets past Lincoln last Saturday.

Dickinson piled up over 100 yards rushing while Vallejo scored one touchdown. Cota, meanwhile, fired teedee strikes to tight end Austin Marks and wide receiver Travis Hansen.

The defense also had its highlights throughout the afternoon as several times the Miners were handed the ball after numerous “three and outs”.

Leading NU’s defensive stands were Hank Humphers, Vallejo, Stone Sander, Townsend, Hurst and Espinosa.

NU hosts the No. 1 power ratings ranked Roseville Jr. Tigers on Saturday.
