Lady Rattler 8th Grade Wins Union Hill Tournament

The Magnolia 8th grade girls basketball team improved to 4-0 on the early season by sweeping through three straight foes to win last weekend’s Union Hill Invitational Tournament played in Grass Valley.

Coach Chuck Nat’s hoop-gals opened the tournament with an easy 59-10 win over Loomis Elementary School. Sara Schell poured in 14 points for Magnolia while Cindy Solomon and Sarah Hagar added 10 apiece and Ali Thill scored eight.

Also providing offense in the win was the trio of Shelby Angus, Amanda Clark and Justine Corralejo who teamed for eight markers.

Magnolia’s most exciting game of the tournament came in the semi-final round as Thill’s basket with three seconds left was the difference in a thrilling 25-24 win over Pleasant Valley.

The narrow win then set the stage for Magnolia’s 42-14 romp over the host Bearcats in the title match. Schell, who was selected to the all-tournament team, led the way with 10 points while Hagar added eight. Magnolia had 10 of its 12-player roster score in the title game.
