Ross Hart of the Penn Valley Jr. Giants awaits a pitch during a recent game against the Foresthill Flames. The Giants continued their winning ways with a pair of wins last week. See details below. June 1, 2009 Giants Rally Past NC Red Sox The Penn Valley Giants’ Jr. division team racked up a pair of wins last week in District 11 interlock action. In the first game, the Giants used a final inning rally to squeak out a 9-8 win over the Nevada City Red Sox while the second contest was a 13-3 breather over the Foresthill Jr. Flames. In the win over the Red Sox, the Giants found themselves down 8-6 going into the 7th inning before using a comeback formula to pull out the triumph. In the 7th, the Giants put two runners on base via walks and then with Tanner Vallejo at the plate a wild pitch put the Giants at second and third. The Sox then decided to intentionally walk the heavy-hitting Vallejo to load the bags but the strategy back-fired when Dakota’s Crider’s hard smash to second base wasn’t handled and two runs scored to tie the game. With the contest tied, Rhys Lyckberg’s ball to the right side of the infield tallied Vallejo with the winning run. Jakob Freele and Jared Cook both had two hits for the Giants with Cook adding 2 RBI's. Ross Frank also added a hit and one RBI while both Lyckberg and Andrew Cummings had hits. Standing out for the Red Sox in the loss was a solid pitching effort from Rob Wood who held the Giants to 7 hits. The Red Sox also had a good defensive outing by Kyle Upton who also added a double. Meanwhile, Garret O'Callagan had a double and a single and Ben Blair and B.Heinzelman added hits. Jakob Freele earned the win for the Giants on the mound. Penn Valley Jr.Giants 13 ForestHill Jr. Flames 3 – A strong pitching effort by Travis Hansen and a pair of grand slam home runs – one by Hansen and the other by Cook – highlighted the Giants’ romp. On the mound Hansen allowed two hits, two walks, eight strike outs and no earned runs in 5 innings for a complete game. Also at the plate for the winners it was Jakob Freele 2x2 with 3 stolen bases; Alex Voboril 1x3 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI, Ross Frank 1x2 with a run scored and Cook with a double to go along with his grand slam. More punch for the Giants came via Lyckberg with a hit and 2 runs scored, Andrew Hedger with a RBI, Dakota Crider with 3 walks and 2 stolen bases, Kyle Yokom with 1 walk and run scored and Ross Hart won a great battle for a walk. |
