Last second basket lifts Warriors past 7 Hills

It doesn’t get any closer than how Weimar Hills and Seven Hills’ girls 8th grade basketball teams played it in Nevada County Athletic League action last Thursday afternoon.

Playing on the Warriors home court at Sierra Hills School in Meadow Vista, Weimar Hills scored five points in the game’s final 20 seconds to pull out a thrilling, 28-27 win over the Raiders from Nevada City.

“We trailed the whole game,” said Weimar Hills coach Marge Sigenfuse. “It was a great comeback by our girls.”

Trailing 27-23 with about 20 seconds left in the contest, Weimar Hills’ Mariah Turcotte, who led her team in scoring with 13 points,  gave her team life by burying a three-point basket.

On the ensuing inbounds pass, Weimar Hills’ defense caused a turnover and Iona Lofrano same up with the loose ball and scored what proved to be the winning basket on a lay-up.

Weimar Hills 7th 28 Seven Hills 18 – Amber Tobiasz scored 13 points and Katy Thomas added eight as the Lady Warriors 7th grade team turned back the Raiders.
