Oct. 10, 2008 PV Defensive Stand Hands MSM 1st Setback It took a great defensive stand in the game’s waning moments to do it but the Mt. St. Mary’s Eagles’ flag football team’s win streak in now history. Leading 22-18 in the game’s final minute, Pleasant Valley’s Vikings held on four downs from inside the five-yard line with defensive tackle Rhys Lyckberg coming up with the key flag pull of an Eagles runner on fourth down to preserve the four-point win. The loss for St. Mary’s was its first of the season after seven straight wins. The early going of Thursday’s battle was all PV as the host Vikings shrugged off a score by the Eagles on the game’s first play from scrimmage to take control of the showdown. With PV quarterback Brandon Fouse receiving excellent protection from his offensive line of Kevin Patterson, Pat Shannon and Logan Martinez, the Vikings got on the scoreboard when Fouse hooked up with James Ramirez on a 43-yard scoring toss. PV then snapped the 6-6 tie when Fouse found tight end Nolan Stefani in the back on the end zone for the two-point conversion and an 8-6 advantage. On the Vikings’ next series, Fouse upped the count to 14-6 when he fired a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Fowler. A 20-yard Fouse to Mark Beauchamp completion was PV’s big play in the scoring drive. St. Mary’s then closed the gap to 14-12 with another touchdown but PV retaliated when Jakob Freele crashed over from two-yards out and Clay Coon followed with a diving two-point conversion reception from Fouse which made the score, 22-12. A big pas play of 43 yards from Fouse out of the backfield to Freele was the key play in what would prove to be PV’s winning scoring drive. Union Hill 8 Yuba River Charter 6 – Jake Berger hauled in a screen pass from quarterback Tyler Sidebottom and dove into the end zone for the game deciding two-point conversion as Union Hill’s Bearcats squeaked past Yuba River Charter School, 8-6. Sidebottom connected with tight end Kyle McCants on a 22-yard touchdown pass for Union Hill’s six pointer. William Elliott was a mainstay for the winners on defense as he starred from his linebacker post with three pass deflections.
