First Half of NCAL Boys Hoop Play Complete

The first half of Nevada County Athletic League boys basketball play came to an end with Tuesday’s games. Here’s a recap of yesterday’s NCAL action:

8th Grade

Magnolia 38 Seven Hills 35, at Nevada City - In a game where the Rattlers led the whole way, host Seven Hills made things interesting late in the game when Garrett O'Callaghan sank a trey that brought the Raiders within 3 points. However the Rattlers were able to hold off the Raiders in the end for the three-point win. A low scoring defensive first half saw the Rattlers up 5-3 after the opening quarter and and then 17 to 6 at intermission. The Raiders closed the gap to 27-22 after three quarters of play before the pivotal fourth stanza. Leading scorers for the Rattlers were Braden Duncan with 12 points, Jared Skowronski with 8 Zack Quirarte with 7 and Charlie Espinoza with 6. Stingy defense by the Magnolia forced Seven Hills into 22 turnovers on the night. Leading the defense were Justin Rypma, Braden Duncan and Tyler Toft. Duncan pulled down 8 rebounds while Skowronski added seven and Rypma five boards respectively. For the Raiders, their leading scorer was Lucas Vojak with 13 points, Garrett O'Callaghan with 11 and Joey Souza with six.


Weimar Hills 50 Union Hill 41, at Meadow Vista – Fresh off a tournament win last weekend at Eagle Peak, Weimar Hills followed 14 points from Chris Harshman and 13 from Michael Wilson to remain perfect after one round of league action. Weimar Hills (6-0) also received key contributions from Jack Baldoni with nine points, Jake Logan with eight and Cole Joyce with six. In addition, Blake Rawlings turned in a solid floor game for the winners. Union Hill (5-1) had big games from center Kyle McCombs with 15 pts and 17 rebounds and Michael Tapia with 9 points and 9 rebounds.

 

7th Grade

Seven Hills 34 Magnolia 29, at Nevada City -  Seven Hills lead 6-4 at the end of a low scoring 1st quarter before Trevor Humphreys came alive in the second quarter when he tallied nine of his season high 21 points in the period to give the Raiders a 21-14 lead at halftime.  Seven Hills built an 11 point lead with 3 minutes left to play but Magnolia hit a couple of big threes from Brett Soloman and Tommy Hereder and a lay up from John Vojek to  score 8 unanswered points and cut the lead to three with 30 seconds to play.However, Harrison McIntosh then grabbed a huge rebound and hit Humphreys with a full court pass and an easy lay-in to put the game away. Steven Skaggs and Ben Beltran did a great job on the boards for Seven Hills (3-3). Skaggs also chipped in 6 points while Trent Foster went 3-4 from the line and finished with three total. Magnolia (3-3) was lead by Solomon’s 10 points, six from Scott Jensen and five from Hereder.

Gilmore 41 Pleasant Valley 17 at Gilmore -   Jericho Mendez sank 12 points and Carlos Carona and Sawyer Gregory added eight rebounds each as the Bombers (5-2) trimmed the Vikings.  Issac Rodriguez sank eight more points and Jordan Hodgkins tallied six for Gilmore.

Weimar Hills 33 Union Hill 13 – Another strong second half defensive showing keyed the Warriors’ win. Leading 15-7 at the intermission, Weimar Hills outscored the Bearcats 18-6 over the final two quarters. Ray Henry’s nine points, eight from Ryan Hallman and four apiece from Scott Irons and Logan Hurst sparked the Warriors (6-0). Christian Straub’s five points and four from Sam Powell led Union Hill (1-5).
