Magnolia 8th Graders Top Bombers

Play in the Nevada County Athletic League boys basketball race for 8th and 7th grade teams began last week and in week two action really picked up around the circuit.

In a doubleheader played Wednesday at Gilmore, Magnolia's 8th grade notched a hard fought 46-31 win over the host Bombers. 46-31. David o"brien popped in 14 points to lead a balanced Rattlers offense.

Also scoring for the Rattlers were Jason Voter with 8 points, Dave Mastrella and Connor Hollister with seven points each and Ben Olena with 5. Topping Gilmore's offense in the game were Jahn Chensee with 16 points and Mario Edwards with 8.

In a close 7th grade game, Gilmore squeaked out a 36-32 win to improve to 2-0 in NCAL action.

In other early NCAL action, Magnolia's 8th grade also rolled to a 58-27 win over Weimar Hills. Eleven different players scored for the Rattlers led by O'Brien's 12 points, and eight each from Kyle Uclaray and Voter. Uclaray also came up with seven steals while Hollister snared eight rebounds and Jimmy Vaugh grabbed seven.

Weimar Hills was led by Matt Harshman with eight points and Drew Oakes with seven.

Union Hill Bearcats 8th Grade Boys take 2nd Place at Weimar Tourney - The Bearcats, played a great tournament with all nine players contributing on the day. They played all three games on Saturday against a field of 12 teams. In the championship game, Toby Carter led all scorers with 15 points and added 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals.

Chance Brown and Casey Angove-King led the way with 8 rebounds each. Other scorers included Daniel Carter and Casey with 10 points each, Kross Corbett hit for 9 points and Chance added 6 more. Cody Voss sunk his only attempt for 2 more points as well as providing excellent passing on offense.

Rounding out the effort were Aaron Fleanor, Logan Loper and Tyler West who put in great defensive efforts for the Bearcats leading to only 9 turnovers against a very aggressive opponent from the Sacramento area. Daniel and Casey were also named to the All Tournament Team.The tournament will help the Bearcats gel as a team early in this season.

The Bearcats travel to South Lake Tahoe this weekend for a three day tournament to test their skills against another group of strong teams. The Union Hill 8th grade team is coached by Dallas Wivholm.
