Magnolia, Weimar Hills Take NCAL Titles

The curtain came down on the Nevada County Athletic League’s girls large school basketball regular season Tuesday afternoon and when the dust had cleared Magnolia’s 8th grade team and Weimar Hills 7th grade squad were standing tall.

In the 8th grade division, Magnolia withstood a tough challenge from Seven Hills Tuesday afternoon before posting a 44-34 win over the Raiders and with it the outright NCAL title.

Coach Chuck Nat’s Rattlers finished the league season with a perfect 12-0 mark and will hold the league’s perpetual trophy for the next year.

On the 7th grade level, Weimar Hills completed a perfect run through the NCAL season by outrunning Union Hill, 31-10.

The Lady Warriors will retain the league’s perpetual trophy that their school’s 7th grade won last season.

The NCAL tourney opens today with four games at Union Hill and single games at Magnolia and Seven Hills.

On Thursday action moves to Park Ave. School and the West Gym at Nevada Union. Friday’s final round will be played at both the West and Ali gyms at NU.

8th Grade

Magnolia’s 44-34 win over Seven Hills was sparked by Michelle Whiting who popped in 13 points.

Following in a balanced Rattlers attack were  Malone Pearson with 11 points and  Taylor Autrey and Jessica Meylor with  10 and 9 points respectively.

Overall on the season, the Rattlers are 14-1.

7th Grade

Weimar Hills 31 Union Hill 10 - Weimar Hills placed eight different players in the scoring column in its win over Union Hill. Mickayla Balser netted 12 points while Rain Lillie sank eight and Shantel Crane added four.

Union Hill 20 Seven Hills 5 – Natalie Weaver tallied six points and Brittney Cervante s added five as the Bearcats used a good defensive effort to stymie the Raiders.
