NU JVs Host Herd Friday

After suffering a tough loss two weeks ago, Nevada Union's JV football team survived a muddy field to hand Laguna Creek a 28-12 Delta Valley League setback. NU is now 7-1 on the season.

NU JVs Bounce Back; Topple Laguna Creek, 28-12

Coming off their first setback of the season, the Nevada Union Miners JVs bounced back in fine form last Friday at Elk Grove Community Stadium. .

Playing in wet, muddy conditions, the Miners atoned for their loss to Franklin of Elk Grove by rebounding for a well-earned 28-12 dousing of Laguna Creek.

Josh Cena tallied a pair of touchdowns for the Miners while Robin Callas and Robin Murray each added one six-pointer.

On the defensive side of the ball, both Tyler Prince and Boddi Winegar collected eight tackles apiece while Jan Cesarez also had a good game with six tackles and a sack.

Other strong defensive games for the Miners came from Taylor Barney, Jake Tilly, Nick Reyes, Devin Grimes, Harris Volleim, Josh Pachio, Tanner Collins, Mike Champagne and John Ettlin. 

NU hosts Elk Grove Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

 

Bear River 20 Mesa Verde 13 – For the first time in league play, Bear River was out-gained in total yards by an opponent but the Bruins managed to win.

In its previous three Pioneer Valley League games – all losses – Bear River had out-gained its foes but came out on the short end on the scoreboard.

Now, 1-3 in PVL games and 3-5 overall, the Bruins built a 14-0 lead on a 57-yard touchdown run by Chris Carcido and a 10-yard tally by Alex Ria.

What proved to be the winning score came in the third quarter when quarterback Joey Lavelle hit Joey Reina with a 20-yard scoring pass.

Top rushers for the Bruins were Chris Carcido (2x60) and Sam Houston (4x40). Both Reina (2x25, 1 TD) and Houston (2x31) led in the receiving department.

Playing good defense for the Bruins were Craig Hackyard and Chris Talbot.

Bear River plays at Lincoln Friday at 5:30 p.m.
