Miners maintain JV No. 1 spot

A 36-20 road win at Natomas – the team’s fourth straight victory – helped the Nevada Union JV football team hold on to the No. 1 spot in this week’s foothillpreps.com’s football poll of area teams.

NU held onto the top spot while previously No. 2 ranked Del Oro lost for the first time this season, 21-13 at Merced.

In the frosh ranks, Del Oro maintained its small lead over Nevada Union after the Golden Eagles traveled to Merced and returned with a 48-0 win.

NU, meanwhile, was just as impressive in a 36-6 blitzing of Natomas.

Here’s this week’s poll:

JV Top Five

  • Nevada Union (4-0) – Winegar-Barney led defense shut down Nighthawks; Up next: Home Friday vs. Franklin of Stockton.

  • Placer (3-1) – Hillmen move up after 33-18 win over Mesa Verde, their third straight. Up Next: Friday at home against El Dorado.

  • Del Oro (3-1) – Eagles fell behind 21-0 before come back fell short. Up Next: Friday at home versus Elk Grove.

  • Colfax (1-3) – Josh Moreno’s 182 rushing yards, Avery Baccala’s three touchdown passes and an 85-yard Jake Kabowski interception return  lead Colfax in its best game of the season. Up next: Friday at Whitney.

  • Bear River (1-3) – Bruins looking to finish drives. Up next: Friday at Lindhurst.

Frosh Big Little Five

  • Del Oro (4-0) – Long trip to Merced didn’t slow Golden Eagles: Up next; Thursday at home versus Elk Grove.

  • Nevada Union (4-0) – Miners show powerful offense and defense in 36-6 romp over Natomas. Up next: Thursday at home against Will C. Wood of Vacaville.

  • Colfax (3-1) – Falcons gave up size but not heart in 15-7 upset of Bear River. Up next: Thursday at Whitney.

  • Bear River (3-1) – Bruins were held to 87 yards total offense by Colfax.

        Placer (1-3) – After facing three stong foes, the Hayden Goodwin-led Hillmen blast Mesa Verde, 39-8.
