NCAL Hoops: Magnolia, UH Win Titles; Tourney Opens

Magnolia’s 8th grade and Union Hill’s 7th grade girls basketball teams put the ribbons around respective championship seasons Monday as the Rattlers and Bearcats both claimed outright regular season Nevada County Athletic League crowns.

Each school will now hold revived NCAL perpetual trophies for their respective grade division for the next year. According to NCAL commissioner Dick Bell, a move was made this year to restore the league’s perpetual trophy format after the tradition was stopped a few years back.

In Monday’s action, the final prelude to the NCAL Tournament which opens today and runs through Friday, Magnolia’s 8th grade girls held off a pesky Union Hill 8th grade squad, 25-22, to complete their season at 12-0 in league play.

Olivia Konttinen’s six points and five from Savannah Welz sparked Rattlers who overall this season are 15-0.

Union Hill’s 7th graders also moved to 12-0 in league with a 41-20 drubbing of Magnolia’s 7th grade team. Lauren Mickel’s 13 points and 11 from Erin Selleck topped the Bearcats’ attack.

Also scoring for the Bearcats were Bailey Walker with seven points, Lindsay Meyer and Annie Aguilar with four each and Ella Corbett with a pair.
