Jones Tallies 28 points To Spark PV Win

In a high-scoring Nevada County Athletic League boys 8th grade basketball shootout, Pleasant Valley’s Vikings followed a 28-point scoring spree by John Jones to turn back Magnolia, 62-57, in overtime Tuesday afternoon at Magnolia.

Pleasant Valley, 5-3 in the NCAL race, battled with host Rattlers in a see-saw affair that saw both teams tied 53-53 at the end of regulation. In the extra period, Pleasant Valley was able to combine timely offense with good defense and outpoint the hosts 9-4 for the triumph.

Backing up Jones’ big scoring spree for the Vikings were Brandon Fouse

and Nolan Stefani, each with 12 points.

Magnolia received a big game of its own from Braden Duncan who hit from a variety of different angles and finished with 25 points. Justin Rypma added 14 more for the Rattlers.

In other 8th grade games Tuesday:

Weimar Hills 55 Forest Lake 43, at Meadow Vista – Playing without starting center Jack Baldoni who was sidelined with a gimpy ankle, the Warriors had seven players step up and score five points or more in stopping the visiting Falcons. Weimar Hills, 8-1 in NCAL 8th grade action, couldn’t shake the Falcons until the fourth quarter as the Warriors led 24-20 at halftime and 37-35 going into the final seven minutes. In the pivotal fourth quarter, Weimar Hills went on an 18-8 run with Jordan Balser scoring all nine of his game total markers in the canto and Adam Gutierrez tallying six of his team high 10 points. Chancey Trentman added seven more points while Kevin Zachman, Wes Woodward and Chris Harshman all scored five points apiece. For Forest Lake, Luke Jordan had a big game with 23 points and Jacob Yarborough tallied eight.

7th Grade

Weimar Hills 34 Forest Lake 24, at Meadow Vista – The host Warriors bounced back from their first league loss last week by limiting the Falcons to just three second half field goals. Weimar Hills, which won its own tournament last weekend, led 14-9 at halftime and then used a strong 14-6 third quarter points exchange to build a 28-15 margin after three quarters. Ray Henry sank 12 points for the winners while Pat Beninga added eight, Jake Breeler tallied seven and Carrick Hoffart four more . Alex Tobiasz came off the bench and hit three of four free shots for the winners while Logan Hurst supplied added punch on the boards. Forest Lake was led by Kyle Kirsch and Logan Markstein each with eight points.

Seven Hills 40 Gilmore 32, at Seven Hills -  Gilmore came out strongand jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on their way to an 11-6 1st quarter lead. Jess Sutton of Gilmore  had 7 points for Gilmore in the 1st quarter. In the second quarter, Harrison McIntosh came off the bench for Seven Hills in the second quarter and brought a ton of energy with 3 steals and sixpoints in the quarter to help put the Raiders up at halftime by three, 21-18. In the third quarter, Jericho Mendez got hot for the Bombers as he hit 7 of his 15 points in the third quarter and kept his team close at 29-27. However, in the fourth quarter the Raiders defense came alive by  limiting the Bombers to one shot as Stephen Skaggs, Harrison McIntosh and Ben Beltran controlled the boards. Seven Hills went on to outscore the visitors 11-5 in the fourth stanza for the final 40-32 win. Despite not shooting well from both the floor and the foul line, the Raiders were led by Stephen Skaggs and Trevor Humphreys with 9 points each while Harrison McIntosh and Ben Beltran added 8 apiece. Gilmore was lead by the one-two punch ofMendez and Sutton who each scored 15 points.
