Jan. 22, 2010 UH, Weimar, 7 Hills All Notch Wins It was a full slate of activity Thursday in Nevada County Athletic League boys junior high basketball. Here’s a complete wrap-up of all the action:
8th Grade Union Hill 50 Magnolia 32, at Lake of the Pines - Union Hill improved to 4-1 on the NCAL season with a win over the host Rattlers. The visiting Bearcats took an early lead and led most of the way, but a late Magnolia rally allowed the hosts to come back in the fourth quarter to pull within 9 points before UH steadied itself and pulled out the triumph. Braden Duncan led the Rattlers with 13 points. For the BearCats, Jake Berger put through 22 markers while Michael Tapia added 11, and Austin Latter stepped up big with 8 more points. On the defensive end, coach Steve Latter cited Kyle McCombs, Parker Rhodes and Beau DesPois as the key contributors to the win. Weimar Hills 53 Gilmore 32, at Meadow Vista – Michael Wilson peppered the hoop for 15 points, Kevin Zachman added 14 and Jordan Balser sank 10 more as the Warriors raised their NCAL record to 5-0 with the win over the Bombers. Jake Mederios and Cole Joyce both added six points to the Warriors’ attack. Weimar held a 30-15 lead at halftime. Gareth Noxon’s six points and five by Jason Murray led Gilmore (1-5). Seven Hills 39 Pleasant Valley 36, at Nevada City – The Raiders won their third game in a row with the tight home court win over the Vikings. An even attack by Seven Hills proved to be the difference in the contest as Luke Vojak netted 11 points, Sean Anderson tallied nine and Garrett O’Callaghan added seven more.
NCAL 8th Grade Weimar Hills, 5-0 Union Hill, 4-1 Seven Hills, 3-2 Pleasant Valley, 3-3 Forest Lake, 2-4 Magnolia, 1-4 Gilmore, 1-5 7th Grade Seven Hills 40 Pleasant Valley 23, at Nevada City – The Raiders led 17-10 after one half of play then pulled away for the victory with a strong second half. Trent Foster led the way for Seven Hills with nine points while Steven Skaggs and Ben Beltran backed him up ably with six points each. For PV, both Chris and Steven had eight points each. Weimar Hills 33 Gilmore 24 at Meadow Vista – Holding a slim 16-15 lead at the intermission, Weimar Hills’ stingy defense limited Gilmore to just two second half field goals that enabled the Warriors to pull away for the win. Nine different Weimar Hills players reached the scoring column. Leading a balanced Warriors offense were Ray Henry with eight points, Pat Beninga with six, Logan Hurst and Carrick Hoffart with four each and Mason Lewis with three. Jake Breeler, Alex Tobiasz, Scott Irons and Chris Lange all tallied two points each for the victors now 5-0 in NCAL play.Gilmore (4-2) was led by Jericho Mendez who tallied nine of his game total 11 points in the first quarter. Jess Sutton added seven and Josh Belendez scored six. Magnolia 31 Union Hill 28, at Lake of the Pines – Wyatt Mitzel’s 12 points helped pace Magnolia past Union Hill despite a 17-point outburst by the Bearcats’ Christian Straub. The Rattlers, now 3-2 in NCAL action, also received six points from John Vojer and four from Tom Hereder. Following Straub in the scoring column for the Bearcats (1-4) was Joe Matteoni with six.
