Nevada Union, BR Frosh Roll To Easy Wins

Nevada Union’s freshman football team opened it season on the road in Shingle Springs Thursday night with a 43-0 romp over host Ponderosa.

Nevada Union halfback Gabe Humphers had a pair of long scoring runs and finished the game with 152 yards rushing while the Miners’ defense added another score on a Kyler Malarae interception return and kept Ponderosa in check throughout.

“It was a good way to start the season,” said NU co-coach Gary Sharpe. “The kids did alright but we have a lot of room to improve still.”

Humphers began the scoring for the Miners with an 80-yard run. He also added the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

Malarae then picked off a Bruins pass and returned it 30 yards for NU’s second score. The point after touchdown pass from Josiah Paye to Conner Fuller made the score 16-0.

In the second quarter, NU boosted its lead to 22-0 when Bradley Spangler tallied on a 20-yard run.

In the second half, NU’s touchdowns came on a 10-yard run by Conner Keith, an 80-yard jaunt by Humphers and a 10-yard tally by Ryan Dela Vega.

Mikey Cordova added a two-point conversion for the Miners and Tyler Houlihan booted through one conversion kick.

Sharpe noted that good defensive games were turned in by Keith, Humphers and Cyle Bush.

NU hosts Rocklin next Thursday at Hooper Stadium at 6 p.m.

Bear River Frosh 61 El Camino 0 -  Bear River’s Bruins weren’t seriously pressed at all in their season opener as they dispatched visiting El Camino, 61-0 in a non-league game.
