NU JVs, Del Oro Frosh Hold Serve

The leaders atop the foothillpreps.com’s weekly high school football rankings “held serve” last week with an impressive pair of victories.

In the JV division, top-ranked NU showed no ill effects of non-playing the previous week because of being awarded a forfeit over no-show Franklin of Stockton.

Hitting on all cylinders last Friday, the Miners came out swinging and never looked back in notching a 58-0 win over Valley.  The win was NU’s sixth straight. The Miners will be at home Friday versus Franklin of Elk Grove at 5:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Del Oro’s freshman, who have hardly been challenged at all thus far this season, posted their biggest win of the season via a 22-7 verdict over Sierra Foothill League rival Granite Bay.

Both the Golden Eagles and Grizzlies had entered the game with identical 5-0 season records but Del Oro used Nick O’Sullivan’s 90-yard punt return as a catalyst in staying on the unbeaten track.

Del Oro will risk its perfect record today at Roseville in a 5:30 p.m. game.

This week’s rankings:

JV Big Five

  • Nevada Union (6-0) – The last time NU’s defense allowed a touchdown, McCain was ahead in the election polls.

  • Placer (5-1) – Josh Turney, Darren centi and Cody Barger have the Hillmen rolling. Placer is averaging 47 points a game in its last four outings.

  • Del Oro (4-2) – The Golden Eagles didn’t get any favors from the “Zebras” last week as two questionable fumble calls inside Granite Bay’s five-yard line doomed the Black and Gold in a 14-7 loss.

  • Colfax (3-3)  - Veteran Colfax coach Rob Hitchcock has the Falcons 3-0 in PVL play.

  • Bear River  (2-4) – Hard luck Bruins had 12-0 lead and dominated the stats but lost 21-19 to Whitney last week.

Frosh Big Little Five

  • Del Oro (6-0)  - Golden Eagles need to stay on “upset alert” after big win over Granite Bay.

  • Nevada Union (5-0) – Miners chomping at the bit for action after “bye” week. NU hosts Franklin of Elk Grove today at 5:30 p.m.

  • Colfax (4-2) – Falcons aren’t big in numbers or stature but vet coaches Alonzo and Luke have the Green and White playing hard.

  • Bear River (4-2) – Bruins have to be best 0-2 frosh team in the Pioneer Valley League.

Placer (3-3) – Hillmen, 44-13 winners over Foothill, are starting to kick things into gear.
