April 6, 2009 PV Jr. Giants Off and Running The Penn Valley Giants’ junior division baseball squad has shot out of the starting gates in District 11 play with three impressive wins. In their first game, the Giants out-slugged the Penn Valley Mets, 15-7, before following that win up with a 13-6 win over the Grass Valley Yankees. The Giants then came back on Penn Valley Little League’s official opening day to drub the Penn Valley Mets, this time by a 15-5 count. Here’s a recap of the Giants’ early contests: Penn Valley Giants 15 Penn Valley Mets 7 – Tanner Vallejo’s fourth inning grand slam home run helped the Giants shake off a slow start and rally past the Mets. Getting the win on the hill for the Giants was Jakob Freele. Freele and Jared Cook each collected a pair of hits in the win while Travis Hansen, Andrew Cummings, Rhys Lyckberg, and Benito Lozada each added one rap apiece. For the Mets, John Jones went 3x4 while Kyle Cota and Colton Peeler both had two hits each. Clay Coon also added a base rap. Penn Valley Giants 13 Grass Valley Yankees 6 - Tanner Vallejo and Jared Cook split the pitching duties and kept the Yankees in check with Vallejo earning the win. Cook was 2x3 at the plate with three RBIs while Vallejo went 2x4 and drove in four RBIs. He also added four stolen bases. Also having a hand in the win was Travis Hansen who was 1x1, drew three walks and stole four bases. Andrew Cummings, Ross Frank, Kyle Yokom, and Dakota Crider all added one hit each. On the Grass Valley side of the ledger, Wills Kemp was 2x3 while Cody Gardner and Logan Gardner each added a hit. Penn Valley Giants 15 Penn Valley Mets 5 - Jakob Freele and Travis Hansen combined pitching talents to tame the Mets.The duo held the Mets to four hits with Hansen earming the mound win. The Giants bats were also hot with Freele collecting a 4x4 day with three RBIs and teammate Tanner Vallejo checking in with a 3x3 plate effort which included another RBI. Also hitting safely for the Giants were Rhys Lyckberg, Ross Frank and Kyle Yokom, all with one safety each. The Mets were led by Kyle Cota, Clay Coon, Beau Depois and Colton Peeler each with a hit. |
