Feb. 6, 2009 Seven Hills hoopsters sweep Union Hill Seven Hills trekked to Union Hill Thursday for a Nevada County Athletic League boys basketball doubleheader with the Bearcats and the Raiders returned home to Nevada City with a pair of wins. In the 8th grade game, the Raiders maintained their two-game NCAL lead over Weimar Hills and Pleasant Valley by posting s 59-40 win over the Bearcats. Using their full court press to create many transitional baskets, coach Brian Ellis’ Raiders jumped out to a 20-8 lead at the end of a quarter and stretched it to 34-17 by intermission. In the second half, the Raiders continued strong play on both ends of the court kept the Bearcats in check. Dalton McClure’s 13 points, 10 from Sean Zuccaro and nine by Lenny Kirshbaum led the Raiders. Daniel Davidson and Luke Agness also played well on defense and in the rebounding department for the winners. Union Hill’s Jason Mickel sank 12 to pace the Bearcats while Gabe Saturnino tallied nine. In the 7th grade game, Union Hill, playing without leading scorer Logan Gardner, was felled by Seven Hills, 28-24, and in the process knocked out of a tie for first place. Seven Hills, which led 15-12 at halftime, was sparked by Garrett O’Callaghan’s eight points and five each from Evan Kittle and Luke Vojak. Sean Anderson also played well on defense for the Raiders. Jake Berger, Beau Despois and Kyle McCombs all had six points apiece for the Bearcats. Seven Hills improved to 6-4 in the 7th grade standings while Union Hill is now 8-2.
