St. Mary’s Tops Ready Springs; UH Battles Magnolia Tough

More opening week Nevada County Athletic League flag football action saw Mt. St. Mary’s School make a successful return to grid action and Union Hill’s combined 7th-8th grade team put up a valiant battle against perennial large school power Magnolia.

In the St. Mary’s-Ready Springs contest, the Eagles, after not fielding a flag football team in 2007, returned to glory in a 62-18 romp over Ready Srings.

St. Mary’s quarterback Michael Buonarati had a big game for the Eagles as he rushed for five touchdowns. Meanwhile, on defense, Ben Kaupt was also impressive as he returned a pair of pass interceptions back for two more scores.

In the Union Hill-Magnolia game, the Rattlers finnaly were able to put away the pesky Bearcats, 25-12 but not without a fight from the Blue and Gold.

With Jake Berger, Michael Barron and Frank Benuzzi all coming up with pass interceptions, Union Hill’s combination squad of 7th and 8th graders turned in a gutsy effort in the loss to the Rattlers.

Also playing well for the Bearcats were Phil Breaux who had both Union Hill touchdowns, one on a 40-yard run.  Other good play came from Melody Collier, Kimberly Ellis, Tyler Sidebottom and Berger who added three pass receptions.

Union Hill plays at Ready Springs on Tuesday.
